The SC Department of Children's Advocacy is seeking a hardworking and dependable candidate to serve as counsel for children who are interested parties in abuse and neglect legal proceedings involving the Department of Social Services. This position offers full‑time employment with state benefits and the opportunity to make a positive impact on child welfare.
Responsibilities
Provide direct representation for appointed children and advise on safety, permanency, and well‑being issues.
Attend hearings, staff complex cases, and prepare pleadings, motions, orders, and appellate briefs.
Advise agency officials on policy questions and legal implications regarding child welfare matters.
Research legal matters and keep abreast of state and federal child welfare law and policies.
Create, track, and maintain data and prepare reports to measure outcomes for children under direct representation.
Qualifications
A Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school and licensed to practice law in South Carolina.
At least 2 years of practice and in good standing with the S.C. Bar.
Knowledge of child abuse and neglect dependency proceedings and general case, statutory, and common law.
Ability to interpret and apply laws, analyze facts and evidence, and express conclusions and arguments clearly and logically.
Demonstrate sound judgment, discretion, and confidentiality.
Valid South Carolina class "D" driver’s license and willingness to travel for hearings throughout the state.
Ability to work independently and manage caseloads with limited supervision.
