JOB SUMMARY
Under direct supervision of the Crew Leader or other assigned supervisor, the Parks Field Tech I is responsible for cleaning and maintaining parks, athletic fields, landscape beds, medians, and other City facilities. Field Tech I is the entry level, trainee, and first working level in the Park Field Tech job family. Persons employed in this class work initially under immediate supervision and receive detailed instructions and training for assignments. A Field Tech I is considered a trainee and is expected to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to advance to the next level of Park Field Tech II. Employees are expected to progress to the point of being able to perform assigned tasks independently with only general supervision.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Operates a variety of motorized equipment such as mowers, weed trimmers, chain saws, fertilizer spreaders, hedge trimmers, pole saws and other related equipment necessary for park maintenance.
Operates, cleans and maintains a variety of motorized vehicles related to park maintenance.
Performs light maintenance and cleaning of all tools and equipment in use.
Works outside maintaining all areas of the City’s park systems, including mowing, trimming, removing trash and debris and cleaning facilities such as pavilions, gazebos and restrooms.
Assists in maintaining horticulture areas such as planting and maintaining flowerbeds, trees, shrubs and grass areas.
Drives vehicles and operates equipment as required.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
Basic knowledge of methods, tools, materials, and equipment used in grounds maintenance work.
Basic knowledge of landscaping, horticulture and irrigation.
Possess excellent customer service skills and can excel at building interpersonal relationships with city staff and the public.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions and to work cooperatively with co-workers.
Ability to learn how to operate and maintain equipment and tools used to maintain City facilities, learn, and obey safety procedures.
Attention to detail is necessary for this position.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED High School Diploma or equivalent is required. Must be at least 18 years of age and possess a valid driver’s license with a good driving record. Must possess a Class “B” CDL with tanker endorsement or have the ability to obtain this license within one (1) year of employment. Any equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Must be in good physical condition.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT Ability to perform strenuous physical activity, including carry/lifting up to 55 pounds, pushing/pulling up to 75 pounds, bending, stooping, reaching, lifting, twisting, standing and walking for extended periods of time in adverse conditions, including extreme heat, cold, moisture, dust, and fumes at various heights and in confined spaces. Majority of work is performed outdoors and is subject to extreme heat and sun or inclement weather. Moderate to heavy lifting and carrying up to 80 pounds.
Work may be subject to time pressures, frequent changes to tasks, working closely with others as part of a team, performing multiple tasks simultaneously, and dealing with difficult persons.
Pre-employment screening includes but is not limited to Drug Screen, Physical Examination, Motor Vehicle Review and applicable Background Checks.
