Overview
Flow Cytometry Technician – Life Sciences Research Professional 1 for the Shared Fluorescence Activated Cell Sorting (FACS) Facility, School of Medicine, Stanford, California. This is a customer-facing role in a fast-paced flow cytometry service center that provides high-quality, state-of-the-art flow cytometric tools and applications to researchers at Stanford and in the surrounding research community. The successful candidate will be trained on advanced flow cytometry and assist users in novel multicolor sorting and analysis. This is a formation that requires good communication, reliability, and punctuality due to its appointment-based model. The role involves working with and teaching others, and supporting researchers with instrument operation, data interpretation, and facility upkeep.
Responsibilities
Independently operate cell analysis and sorting instruments in the Stanford Shared FACS Facility service center. Perform routine maintenance on facility equipment, including startup and QC of cytometers. Understand and apply common and unique biological applications, cell handling techniques, and reagents; assist researchers in designing and optimizing FACS experiments. Collaborate with research staff on updates to FACS facility instruments and computer capabilities. Work a flexible schedule and in a BSL-2 environment to meet facility needs. Provide training to assist self-operators and improve skills in all aspects of FACS and CyTOF instrument function. Assist researchers in data interpretation. Perform general lab maintenance, maintain lab stock, manage chemical inventory and safety records, and provide general lab support as needed. Other duties may also be assigned. General understanding of scientific principles. Demonstrated ability to apply knowledge and skills when needed. Ability to apply theoretical software and science principles to problem-solve work. Ability to maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes. General computer skills and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs, databases, and scientific applications. Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance. Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to accurately complete detailed work. Physical Requirements
Frequently stand, walk, twist, bend, stoop, squat, grasp, use fine manipulation, use computer tasks, write by hand, lift and carry objects weighing over 40 pounds. Occasionally sit, kneel, crawl, reach, and work above shoulder level; sort and file paperwork or parts. Rarely climb, scrub, sweep, mop, chop and mix or operate hand and foot controls. Must have corrected vision to perform duties. Ability to bend, squat, kneel, stand, reach above shoulder level, and move on hard surfaces for up to eight hours. Ability to lift heavy objects up to 50 pounds. Ability to work in dusty, dirty, and odorous environments and to perform repetitive motion.
