We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Database Administrator with a strong background in SQL Server to join our client’s data and development team on a contract basis. This role is responsible for the design, implementation, maintenance, and performance tuning of database systems that support critical applications and services. The ideal candidate combines hands‑on expertise in T‑SQL/PL‑SQL, database administration, and performance optimization, along with a collaborative approach to supporting development teams and aligning with enterprise architecture standards.
Responsibilities
Design and implement logical and physical database models.
Coordinate changes to database structure and code across development and production environments.
Define database schema using SQL (DDL), manage access controls (DCL), and set physical parameters.
Ensure scalable and maintainable solutions that meet performance benchmarks.
Create, configure, and monitor SQL Server databases using SSMS, SQL Server Agent, and monitoring tools (e.g., SolarWinds, Redgate, Idera).
Tune queries and manage resource utilization for optimal performance.
Collaborate with developers and analysts to ensure high‑performing, integrated database systems.
Evaluate and manage data elements in a shared environment, reducing redundancy and maintaining uniform definitions.
Conduct data modeling and prototyping to support application requirements.
Define recovery procedures, storage needs, and access strategies.
Implement backup and recovery strategies in line with compliance and business continuity standards.
Manage user access, audit controls, and security best practices.
Assist with software installs, updates, and performance threshold testing.
Provide expertise in SQL and PL/SQL for stored procedures, packages, and functions.
Review and optimize SQL code written by development teams.
Collaborate with solution architects to build scalable, secure, and performant database systems.
Establish and maintain development standards across multiple teams.
Qualifications
10+ years of hands‑on SQL development (T‑SQL/PL‑SQL) with query tuning and performance optimization.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Strong attention to detail and a structured approach to documentation.
Highly collaborative team player with a growth mindset.
Self‑motivated with the ability to manage priorities and meet deadlines in a fast‑paced environment.
6+ years of experience with PowerShell scripting.
6+ years of experience with Azure DevOps.
6+ years of experience with Agile/Scrum methodologies.
Proven experience with SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS).
Proven experience with SQL Server Agent.
Proven experience with database monitoring tools (e.g., SolarWinds, Redgate, Idera).
Strong understanding of database security, backup and recovery procedures, high availability (HA) and disaster recovery (DR) configurations.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with ETL processes and Azure SQL.
Background in large‑scale or data warehouse environments.
Exposure to performance benchmarking and database compliance frameworks.
