Senior Associate - State & Local Tax Accountant
Location Designation:
Hybrid - 3 days per week New York Life is seeking a highly skilled and motivated State and Local Tax (SALT) Professional to join our dynamic tax team. This Indirect Tax position will have a particular emphasis on sales and use taxes and/or informational/withholding reporting supporting our insurance business operations, procurement process and ensuring compliance with state and local tax regulations. As a key member of our tax department, you will be responsible for handling various indirect tax related matters, including overseeing state and local reporting and advisory services. A strong understanding of sales and use tax regulations, and a proven ability to navigate complex reconciliation requirements are a plus. What You'll Do
Sales & Use Tax Objectives Review state and local sales and use tax returns for multiple jurisdictions. Analyze business transactions to ensure proper taxability of goods and services. Work with external vendors to resolve sales tax issues and discrepancies. Identify and resolve discrepancies or issues in sales tax calculations. Implement, configure, and manage sales tax software to meet business needs and maintain accuracy in sales tax reporting Informational Reporting Oversee the timely and accurate preparation and filings of federal, state, and local tax compliance, including the uploading of forms 1099, 1042-S, W2, and related documents. Assist with the reconciliation of tax reporting data and preparation of tax schedules. Coordinate with internal stakeholders to collect necessary information for reporting. Advisory and Strategy Provide proactive advice on the impact of state and local tax laws on business operations and strategies. Support the development of tax-efficient strategies and help identify opportunities for tax savings. Audit Support Assist in managing state and local tax audits, including gathering documentation, responding to queries, and implementing audit adjustments. Tax Technology and Automation Leverage tax technology to streamline compliance processes and improve efficiency. Contribute to system upgrades or implementation of new tools to support tax reporting needs. What You'll Bring
Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. CPA or MST is a plus. Experience: 3-5 years of experience in state and local taxation, with a focus on either information reporting (e.g., 1099s, 1042-S) and/or sales taxes. Familiarity with tax compliance software and ERP systems (e.g., SAP, Thompson Reuters Determination, Ariba, One Source Tax Information Reporting or similar tools). Skills & Knowledge: In-depth understanding of state and local tax laws, regulations, and compliance requirements. Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex tax legislation. Excellent communication skills to work cross-functionally with teams across the organization. Detail-oriented with strong organizational and problem-solving abilities. Ability to work with minimal supervision and take initiative. Technology Proficiency: Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, SharePoint), with advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, v-lookups, etc.). Knowledge of tax automation tools and ERP systems is a plus. Pay Transparency
Salary Range: $77,500-$95,000 Overtime eligible: Exempt Discretionary bonus eligible: Yes Sales bonus eligible: No Actual base salary will be determined based on several factors but not limited to individual’s experience, skills, qualifications, and job location. Additionally, employees are eligible for an annual discretionary bonus. In addition to base salary, employees may also be eligible to participate in an incentive program. Our Benefits
