Job Description The Surgical First Assistant Coordinator, under the guidance of the primary Surgeon, is responsible for the care and treatment of patients in the Operating Room. The individual prepares operating rooms, assists surgeons, and performs the role of the scrub technician while maintaining a sterile field.

Essential Functions

Prepares surgical operating suite with drapes, solutions, instruments, equipment, and supplies.

Ensures good working order of equipment and instruments.

Applies principles of aseptic technique to establish and maintain a sterile field.

Poses patients for optimal exposure and comfort, using stabilizing equipment as needed.

Assisters with retraction, sponging, suctioning, irrigation, and achieving hemostasis.

Assists with body plane closure, wound dressing application, and securing drainage systems.

Participates in daily unit duties, maintaining a clean, safe, and organized work area.

Performs instrument counts and terminal cleaning per policy to prevent recounts.

Communicates maintenance of the sterile field and follows surgical attire policy.

Supports policy development and updates, contributing to a culture of safety and quality.

Minimum Education

Graduate of an approved program for surgical technicians or a military training program in surgical technology with a high school diploma or GED.

Certification in BLS.

Graduation from a CAAHEP accredited Surgical First Assisting Program (SFA) and certification as a Certified Surgical First Assist (CSFA).
