UNIV-Agricultural/Animal Assistant‑DLAR Medical University of South Carolina – MUSC Health (MUSC‑Univ)

Overview Perform routine cage sanitation, maintenance, and housekeeping in a vivarium setting to ensure compliance with DLAR SOPs, safety protocols, and institutional regulations.

Responsibilities

Start‑up and shut‑down all cage wash machines; ensure equipment is in proper working order.

Wash, sterilize, assemble, and disassemble animal caging, racks, and accessories; dispense bedding accurately.

Safely operate rack, tunnel washers, bedding dispensers, autoclaves, and other equipment; prepare and use appropriate sanitizing chemicals.

Maintain cage wash and storage areas clean and organized; dispose and process hazardous waste per university and DLAR guidelines.

Perform routine preventative maintenance on cage washers, animal caging systems, and related equipment; conduct quality assurance using temperature strips and biological indicators.

Transport animal feed, bedding, caging, racks, and supplies between facilities using trucks, pallet jacks, carts, and dollies.

Receive deliveries, stack, store, and organize supplies; monitor availability and communicate low‑stock needs to supervisor.

Ensure cleaning, sweeping, mopping, garbage removal, and sanitization tasks are completed per DLAR SOP.

Maintain documentation for cage wash equipment, sanitation activities, maintenance, quality assurance, and operation; communicate equipment issues to supervisor.

Provide absentee support for cage wash technicians; assist during unusual circumstances; provide animal care as needed; ensure completion of training requirements.

Qualifications

High school diploma (or equivalency) required; valid driver’s license preferred.

Minimum 2 years experience in agricultural research or animal care directly related to the area of employment.

Associate degree in animal health technology or related discipline may substitute for experience.

Certification as a laboratory animal technician may be required for positions responsible for the care of laboratory animals.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to lift 50 lbs. above waist routinely; able to lift 25–40 lbs. as needed.

Work in confined, cramped, and dusty environments; able to work with animals of various sizes.

Wear DLAR‑issued PPE; work in reverse light cycle rooms; understand safety requirements for autoclave, rack washer, and tunnel washer.

May be exposed to animal allergens and zoonotic diseases.
