Train Conductor
with
CPKC , North America’s transnational railroad connecting the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. This foundational crew role emphasizes safety, teamwork, and the ability to manage yards, switching operations, and train movements in a 24/7 environment.
Position Overview The conductor assists in yard switching, train crew coordination, and safety operations. This role offers a career path toward Yard Foreperson, Locomotive Engineer, or management, and involves unscheduled shifts, outdoor work, and daily duties that may require up to 12‑hour blocks.
Key Responsibilities
Coordinate switching, coupling, and uncoupling of rail cars and manage yard movements.
Interpret and relay signals, operating rules, and support crew signals or radio instructions.
Maintain compliance with the General Code of Operating Rules, general orders, and bulletins.
Provide flag protection and emergency signal support for trains.
Complete train orders, switch lists, and legible reporting forms.
Respond to emergency situations, operate fire extinguishers, and apply first aid techniques.
Qualifications
Minimum 18 years old with a high school diploma or equivalent.
Valid driver’s license and ability to pass a physical job assessment, written examinations, and safety instruction reviews.
Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including walking up to 6 miles on uneven ground, lifting up to 80 pounds, and enduring outdoor work in all weather conditions.
Willingness to work unscheduled 24/7 shifts, 12‑hour blocks, and a two‑hour call window for scheduled rest.
Excellent focus, attention to detail, strong communication skills, and the ability to multitask.
High physical and cognitive standards to pass required safety and operating rule tests.
