About Us NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 19,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving the lives and property of its citizens through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced after conviction for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes State Prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as the division of Community Supervision. Other divisions include Administration, Compliance & Accreditation, Comprehensive Health Services, Internal Affairs & Intelligence Operations, Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission, and Rehabilitation & Reentry.

Description of Work Salary Range: $37,621 - $54,078 Salary Grade: NC05-NC07 All hires are eligible for a $3,000 Sign on Bonus. Positions are also eligible for an employee referral bonus program ($1,000).

We are seeking full‑time employees to join our team as Correctional Officers and are pleased to announce the new Step Pay Plan approved by the NC Legislature.

Correctional Officer Levels

Correctional Officer I: Minimum security level.

Correctional Officer II: Medium security level.

Correctional Officer III: Close security level.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Ability to communicate effectively in verbal and written form.

Responsibilities

Ensure the care, custody, and control of offenders.

Tour assigned areas, including periodically climbing stairs.

Observe offender activity in person and on closed‑circuit monitors.

Identify offenders who have behavioral, medical, or other problems so that appropriate safety and security measures may be taken.

Perform general security duties to prevent escape, disorder, rule infractions, and harm to offenders, visitors, and staff.

Search offenders, visitors, cells, and other areas for weapons and contraband.

Monitor and regulate offender and staff movement.

Maintain and record offender counts, cell assignments, and other pertinent information.

Escort offenders within and outside the institution.

Use and maintain keys and other equipment.

Supervise offender work details.

Minimum Education and Experience

High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma or equivalent.

For Correctional Officer II: One year of experience as a Correctional Officer or equivalent.

For Correctional Officer III: Two years of experience as a Correctional Officer or equivalent.

Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.

Work Schedule This is a full‑time position. Employees must be able to work any shift, including rotating, fixed shift, or split shift. All shifts may include days, nights, weekends, holidays, and mandatory overtime as required.
