Postdoctoral Scholar The Heilpern lab in the Department of Earth System Science at Stanford University invites applications for a full-time Postdoctoral Scholar. Our group studies the causes and consequences of biodiversity change, especially in aquatic ecosystems and as it relates to human nutrition and energy security.

We are seeking a highly motivated scientist to quantify the diversity of wild vertebrate species used for food (e.g., fishes, bushmeat) and identify the ecological, nutritional, and cultural factors shaping their use in commerce and subsistence across societies. The project integrates trait-based, nutritional, and macroecological approaches and is part of a larger collaboration spanning the Amazon, the Congo Basin, and global comparisons.

While our priority is to recruit a candidate whose interests and experience align with the above, we also welcome exceptional candidates whose interests align with one or more of the following lab themes:

Environmental and nutritional tradeoffs of freshwater aquaculture expansion

Macroecology, functional traits and elemental/nutrient variation in fishes and other aquatic vertebrates

Use of innovative mechanisms such as carbon markets to resolve tradeoffs between greenhouse gas emissions and biodiversity around protected areas and renewable energy expansion.

Ideal candidates will have a strong quantitative background and ecological intuition, are motivated to understand how biodiversity mediates ecosystem responses to global change, and aim to identify solutions for decoupling food and energy security from biodiversity loss.

Required Qualifications

PhD in Ecology, Environmental Sciences or a related field

Strong quantitative skills (e.g. mathematical modeling, statistical modeling, ML/AI, remote sensing, geospatial statistics)

Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research

Record of publishing high-quality science in peer-reviewed journals

Excellent written and oral communication skills

While this position is fully funded, prospective postdoctoral researchers are encouraged to apply to competitive fellowships including national programs (e.g., Smith Fellows) and Stanford-sponsored programs (see here).
