Wesleyan University Get AI-powered advice on this job and more exclusive features. Wesleyan University’s Department of Classical Studies invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track appointment in Latin literature to begin in July 2026; the rank is Open. We seek a scholar-teacher with a strong philological foundation who approaches their research through a postclassical lens and foregrounds engagement with contemporary practice. In their research and teaching, the successful candidate will put the social and literary histories of ancient Greece and Rome into conversation with other cultures, of antiquity and the present day, within or beyond the Mediterranean. The range of methodologies is open but can include specialization in literary analysis, translation theory, reception, or political theory.
Successful candidates will have a strong and demonstrated commitment to undergraduate liberal arts education and to strategies of inclusive teaching, and a commitment to widening access and participation in the discipline. Candidates who can engage students in their research are especially welcome.
The teaching load is 2/2, in person on Wesleyan’s campus. Applicants should be prepared to teach Latin at all levels, along with courses in their area of specialization, and broad courses for non-majors. Additional duties include advising and mentoring students, carrying on an innovative research program, and participating in faculty governance at the departmental and university level.
The minimum requirement for this position is a PhD in Classics or a related field in hand at the time of application.
With a strong and diverse undergraduate student body, Wesleyan is a highly selective liberal arts college that values both scholarship and teaching very highly and offers a generous sabbatical program and competitive salaries and benefits.
