Apply: All candidates must submit an application to the City of Seattle. A resume and cover letter are not required.
Register and Complete Two (2) Exam Components: The law enforcement exam components are self-scheduled through the National Testing Network (NTN). Examinations are offered virtually or at locations across the United States, and the City of Seattle will pay for the exam. The required components include Frontline National (Law Enforcement Exam) and the Public Safety Self-Assessment (Parts 1 & 2).
Exam Notes: Candidates are not required to complete the NTN Personal History Questionnaire (PHQ) for SPD. If you have taken the NTN exam for another department within the last year, you may send your scores to SPD via the NTN account. Contact NTN candidate support for assistance transferring scores to SPD.
Physical Agility Test: Scheduling the written exam may prompt scheduling the Washington Physical Ability Test (WAPAT). Passing the WAPAT is required to move forward. Out-of-state candidates are not required to travel to Washington for the WAPAT.
Background: After passing WAPAT, you will receive a link to complete the personal history information. SPD will conduct a thorough background investigation. Meet the minimum qualifications listed below.
Medical, Psychological, and Polygraph: A medical evaluation (including drug screening, medical history, vision/hearing tests, and a stress EKG) is required. A psychological exam is conducted via Zoom; some medical tests occur at specific Seattle locations. A final offer follows successful completion of all steps.
Exam results are typically released within about three weeks after completing all components. Eligible candidates are ranked on an eligible list by exam scores. Preference Points
The City of Seattle offers multiple forms of preference points, applied to exam scores after passing the exam. Preference requests are evaluated according to Rules 9.17 - 9.21 of the City\'s Public Safety Civil Service Commission. These include: Veteran\'s Preference Language (Multilingual) Preference Human/Social Services Preference City of Seattle Work Preference (prior SPD service, or experience as a 911 dispatcher or Parking Enforcement Officer) *Please note that candidates must pass the WAPAT in addition to the civil service exams to be eligible for certain preference points. Police Officers are first responders who provide essential public safety services under supervision, in accordance with the SPD mission and applicable laws. Entry Level Police Officer: no prior law enforcement experience or completed self-sponsored academy; not a commissioned officer Exceptional Entry Police Officer: completed a basic academy and FTO, but lacking 24 months of recent service; must test with entry-level candidates and is not eligible for lateral entry Provides for public safety by maintaining order, responding to emergencies, enforcing laws, and promoting community relations Operates a patrol car, patrols streets and areas to deter crime Investigates hazards, conducts initial investigations, may assist detectives, and preserves evidence Arrests/detains suspects; reviews facts to determine charges Records incidents and prepares reports Administers first aid and transports individuals in custody Presents evidence and testimony in judicial settings The City of Seattle provides 24/7 police service; shift work, including nights, weekends, and holidays, is required. Eligibility Standards
Be at least 20.5 years old Hold United States citizenship, legal permanent residency, or be a DACA recipient Have a high school diploma or GED Applicants must meet all eligibility standards by the date of participation in the exam process. Minimum Employment Standards
Drug use standards prior to the exam include: No marijuana use within 12 months No cocaine or crack use within 5 years No use of club drugs within 3 years No hallucinogens within 5 years No PCP within 5 years No opiates or heroin within 5 years No methamphetamine use within 5 years No inhalants or other listed substances within 3 years No illegal drug use while employed in a criminal justice capacity No manufacturing, cultivating, selling, or facilitating illegal drugs Note: Illegal drug use and illegal use of prescription drugs as defined by applicable laws are disqualifying. Offers of employment are conditioned on a pre-employment drug screen. Traffic Record: Driving history will be assessed. Potential disqualifiers include DWI, reckless driving, hit & run, suspension within 5 years, multiple moving violations, or accidents at fault within 5 years. Criminal History: A candidate\'s criminal history, including arrests and non-convictions, will be thoroughly assessed. Disqualifying: any adult felony conviction, any misdemeanor or felony in a criminal justice capacity, any domestic violence conviction. Employment/Financial History: Prior terminations, or leaving employment in lieu of termination, and poor financial history may be grounds for disqualification. Professional appearance and tattoos/branding are assessed on a case-by-case basis; a Washington State Driver\'s License is required before hire. Ability to type 35 wpm is desirable. Seattle residence is not required for application or appointment.
