Boys & Girls Club Academic Leaders, hosted by the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence, serve directly with Lawrence school district personnel and Boys & Girls Club staff to provide academic interventions to targeted students in all 12 Boys & Girls Club after school program sites. Research shows that youth who are not on track with reading and math in the 4th and 5th grades are four times more likely to drop out of school before they graduate. In order to address these challenges the AmeriCorps members provide academic interventions to students from K-12th grade, with the primary focus on enhancing reading and math knowledge. Members will serve in a district school to develop and implement academic enrichment activities for the after school program that complement school curricula; identify individuals and groups in need of focused one-on-one or group tutoring and provide it to them; facilitate one-on-one and group academic enrichment activities; and consistently provide a positive learning environment and promote the personal, social, and intellectual development of Club members.
