Overview
The Safety Coordinator will work closely with the Quality department and Facilities department to support all facilities and safety department activities, including improving patient safety and reducing patient harm. In addition, the Coordinator will assist all departments with the administration of the Safety and Compliance activities. Supervision

Non-Exempt, Full Time, 40 hrs/week, Days Job Qualifications
Associate’s degree in public policy, Health Policy, Healthcare, or a related field is preferred A minimum of 3+ years of healthcare-related experience in policy development, procedures, documentation, or technical writing—or an equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience—is preferred Experience in regulatory and survey readiness and response activities required. Regulatory and Patient safety experience preferred Knowledgeable of CMS, CDC, OSHA and other reportable agencies’ performance measures Demonstrated knowledge of facilitating and coordinating healthcare improvement projects with previous quality improvement project experience Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills Self-motivated and continuous independent learning capability required High degree of creativity in problem-solving Principal Responsibilities
Assists management with the identification and evaluation of high risk hazards and development of measures for their control Continuously evaluates and improves patient safety program based on internal needs and external requirements and standards In collaboration within the Quality Department, directs the development of a comprehensive Patient Safety Plan and updates the plan as needed Develops annual patient safety goals in collaboration with the Quality Improvement Committee and assists with implementation and ongoing analysis of those goals Works within the Quality Department to monitor literature and professional organizations for new or revised best practices related to patient safety. Maintains Emergency Management Equipment and inventory. Sets standards for safety equipment. Assists managers and supervisors on the safe use of new equipment. Supervises and oversees third party vendor for preventative maintenance of equipment Establishes and reviews policies, procedures, and controls for investigating, evaluation, and reporting on security and safety, patient safety, and other Environment of Care (EOC) related processes in conjunction with the Quality Department and Facilities Department Assists in training for Emergency Preparedness programs, including Decon team and utilizes communication tools in the event of potential/actual emergency events Maintains Fire Drill records and performs monthly fire drills in hospital and clinics. Coordinates fire prevention, emergency response, and evacuation procedures and activities. Coordinates activities with the local fire and police departments with regard to safety matters Participates and assists with EOC safety rounds; ensures current documentation Coordinates monthly Safety Committee meetings Assists with annual Fire Safety Plan and other annual requirements as needed Assists Facilities Director with incident investigations Assists with Product Recalls investigations and dispositions Assists with regulatory readiness for State, and local surveys Assists with safety education and follow-up Directs the evaluation, monitoring, and improvement of compliance with internal and external quality indicators and requirements Maintains “expert” knowledge of standards related to accreditation and regulatory bodies (e.g., The Joint Commission, CMS, IDPH, CARF, OSHA, HFAP). Ensures complete documentation of compliance Participates as a member of the Hospital Incident Command System, including assisting in the planning of emergency management drills and community-based emergency planning activities Prepares detailed reports, presentations and dashboards, presents findings at a variety of quality/regulatory meetings and facilitates follow-up plans; communicates status of plans to responsible designated individuals Coordinates all domains of practice that relate to patient safety and participates in the development of strategies to improve the reporting of patient safety related events Develops, analyzes and presents patient safety metrics and benchmarks to the Quality Committee Provides staff with initial safety orientation and ongoing policy and procedure training related to safety and emergency preparedness Prepares reports, presentations, and summaries for senior leadership as required Performs other duties as assigned Performance Standards
Maintains and promotes good health practices Will conform to TCHS policies and procedures Maintain confidentiality and compliance with HIPAA Understand and comply with the requirements of Thayer County Health Services’ Compliance Program, including, but not limited to, the Code of Conduct, the Compliance Manual. All supporting policies for compliance and compliance plans Participate in all education and training programs regarding compliance as required by organizational policy and as requested by supervisor Demonstrates AIDET with patients, visitors and TCHS staff Willingly accepts new responsibilities and cooperates with implementation of change Dresses in neat, clean professional attire according to Dress Policy; maintains high personal hygiene standards Demonstrates respect, integrity, compassion, and excellence through a “We Care” philosophy with all patients, visitors, and TCHS staff Working Conditions
Exposure to different working environments, including normal office workplaces, patient care areas, and plant operations locations Exposure to different elements of weather, and potential exposure to hazardous chemicals and biological materials Must possess sight/hearing senses or use prosthetics that will enable the senses to function adequately for the requirements of position to be fully met Health care workers who prepare or administer hazardous drugs or who work in areas where these drugs are used may be exposed to these agents in the air or on work surfaces, contaminated clothing, medical equipment, patient excreta, and other surfaces. Studies have associated workplace exposures to hazardous drugs with health effects such as skin rashes and adverse reproductive outcomes (including infertility, spontaneous abortions, and congenital malformations) and possibly leukemia and other cancers. The health risk is influenced by the extent of the exposure and the potency and toxicity of the hazardous drug. Due to these risks, all pharmacy staff are required to be fitted annually for a filtered respirator
