Pay Range This position offers a base pay range of $37,621.00 to $54,078.00 per year, based on skills and experience.
About the Department The North Carolina Department of Adult Correction (DAC) is one of the largest state agencies with over 19,000 employees. It safeguards the lives and property of citizens through prevention, protection, and preparation, and provides care, custody, and supervision for adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. DAC operates state prisons, health care and facility operations, and community supervision divisions.
Description of Work DAC is hiring full‑time Correctional Officers for Level I, II, and III positions nationwide. The Step Pay Plan offers competitive starting salaries with guaranteed annual increases based on experience. Candidates with prior DAC experience may receive full credit for each year of service.
Responsibilities
Ensure the care, custody, and control of offenders.
Tour assigned areas, climbing stairs and observing offender activity in person and on closed‑circuit monitors.
Identify offenders with behavioral, medical, or other problems and implement appropriate safety and security measures.
Perform general security duties to prevent escape, disorder, rule infractions, and harm to offenders, visitors, and staff.
Search offenders, visitors, cells, and other areas for weapons and contraband.
Monitor and regulate offender and staff movement.
Maintain and record offender counts, cell assignments, and other pertinent information.
Escort offenders within and outside the institution.
Use and maintain keys and other equipment, and supervise offender work details.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Communicate effectively in verbal and written form.
Apply active listening, observation, and interpersonal skills.
Use sound judgment and decision‑making in unfamiliar and stressful circumstances.
Employ critical thinking and problem‑solving skills to address challenges.
Function with a high level of personal appearance and grooming standards.
Meet the physical demands (standing for eight hours, lifting up to 120 pcf, working a shift of 46 hours a week).
Minimum Education and Experience
High School diploma or General Educational Development (GED) and one year of experience as a Correctional Officer, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, for Level II.
High School diploma or GED and two years of experience as a Correctional Officer, or an equivalent combination, for Level III.
High School diploma or GED for a trainee appointment.
Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
Special Qualifications
Active driver’s license.
Must be willing to work any shift, including rotating, fixed, or split shifts, and all days, nights, weekends, holidays, and mandatory overtime.
