Overview
The Middleton Police Department is seeking motivated, team-oriented candidates for a challenging but rewarding career in law enforcement. We provide all necessary training, so no prior experience is required. We are also accepting applications for lateral transfers for certified law enforcement officers, with potential entry at a higher pay level. The Middleton Police Department consists of 54 employees, including 42 sworn officers. The staff includes a Chief of Police, two Captains, four Lieutenants, four Sergeants, four Detectives, three School Resource Officers, a Community Policing Officer, a K9 Officer, and 22 patrol officers.
Responsibilities Police Officers are generalists responsible for a wide range of tasks including enforcement of laws and ordinances, investigation of crimes and other incidents of public concern, protection of life and property, civil rights, and public order. Officers are expected to be knowledgeable in the law, legal procedures, departmental policies, and the skills necessary to perform their duties. They work under general supervision and are subject to review by ranking officers and must obey lawful orders.
Essential duties include:
Perform all lawful assignments as prescribed by the Chief of Police or designee and duties required by state law, city ordinance, and department policy.
Engage in law enforcement patrol functions, including shifts (weekends and holidays), walking or bike patrol, door/window checks for security.
Operate a law enforcement vehicle day and night; respond to emergencies in various conditions.
Make arrests, use restraints, and apply appropriate force in self-defense as required.
Pursue suspects and perform rescue operations; handle physical tasks involved in entering/exiting vehicles and moving barriers.
Conduct searches of people, vehicles, and premises; detain suspicious individuals as needed.
Provide emergency medical aid and assist in evacuations as necessary.
Detect and collect evidence; conduct visual and audio surveillance; monitor traffic and pedestrian movement.
Perform routine patrols to prevent or observe crimes and disturbances; respond to medical emergencies and other incidents.
Assess situations using independent judgment to determine detentions, searches, and use of force; enforce laws impartially within policy and discretion.
Communicate effectively in person, over radios, and in investigations; provide information and directions to the public; assist in conflict resolution.
Perform related administrative duties, including reading and drafting legal documents (citations, warrants, affidavits), investigations, reporting, and using department computers.
Marginal Duties:
Other duties as assigned and appropriate.
Administrative Details This position is a Regular Full-Time Permanent role. Full-time employees participate in the Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS). Other benefits vary by hire status. See the benefits portion of the job posting for details.
Administrative and Entry Provisions Documentation Submission: This application requires supporting documents including a narrative essay. Failure to submit required documentation will disqualify the application.
Pay/Status: This position is non-exempt (FLSA) with a salary basis that is non-exempt; schedule is 75 hours per pay period, rotating 6 days on – 3 days off. Non-supervisory and represented.
Lateral Entry Provisions Police Officers hired into Middleton Police Department and meeting certain combinations of post-academy experience and education may, at the Chief of Police’s discretion, enter laterally as a Police Officer II and progress as follows:
Officers with >4 years’ experience and an Associate Degree enter as Police Officer II. Promotions to Police Officer III occur after four years of service with Middleton or upon obtaining a Bachelor’s Degree and two years of service, whichever occurs first.
Officers with >4 years’ experience and a Bachelor’s Degree enter as Police Officer II. Promotion to Police Officer III occurs after two years of service with Middleton.
Police Officers hired laterally as Police Officer II accrue vacation at 15 days per year.
Qualifications Knowledge
Required: Current knowledge of law, ordinances, and departmental policies and regulations.
Preferred: Familiarity with city streets and locations within the area.
Skills
Required: Demonstrated skills in standard police field procedures; ability to load, unload, and fire firearms under stress; effective written and verbal communication.
Required: Ability to read and comprehend legal and non-legal documents, including citations, affidavits, and warrants.
Abilities
Required: Ability to operate department and personal equipment (emergency vehicles, firearms, cameras, speed detectors, computers, radios); function under stress; maintain medical and physical fitness; legally possess a firearm; operate a motor vehicle with a valid Wisconsin driver's license.
Preferred: Conversational fluency in additional languages.
Education
Required: High School Diploma or equivalent; sixty (60) college credits with minimum 2.0 GPA within 5 years of employment.
Associate degree preferred; Bachelor's degree or higher in Criminal Justice or related field is highly preferred.
Training
Any additional requirements as established by the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board or Middleton Police Commission.
Experience/Other
Required: United States Citizenship at time of application; 18 years of age at time of application; no felony or domestic violence convictions for which you have not been granted an absolute and unconditional pardon.
