Entry level applicants must successfully pass the Frontline test with the National Testing Network (NTN) and pass the ORPAT (5:30 or less) prior to submitting an application. Out of state applicants may submit their application without an ORPAT, but a passing time will be a condition of any final offer. Test scores from NTN are valid for one year. If you have completed and passed the ORPAT with another agency within one year of your application date, you can have those results submitted via email to training@linnsheriff.org. Lateral applicants are not required to complete the testing (Frontline and ORPAT) through NTN at this time. A lateral is defined as someone who has been through the academy and holds (or has held) a certification in the discipline for which they are applying.

The Sheriff\'s Office may close this recruitment at any time, without further notice. General Statement of Duties/Job Objectives

Enforces state and local traffic, criminal and civil laws and County Codes. Patrols roads, waterways and business and residential areas. Investigates traffic accidents, crimes and complaints relating to criminal law enforcement in the County. Arrests and books suspects; serves warrants of arrest, subpoenas, summons and other civil process. Appears as witness in Court. Administers first aid, assists with search and rescue, receives and maintains evidence, prepares necessary reports. Duties may include assignment as a Resident Deputy Sheriff in a community or broad geographic area located at some distance from the central operations. Supervision

Supervision Received:

Works under the general supervision of a Sergeant on an assigned shift who coordinates and directs Deputy\'s activities during the shift. The Sergeant or Shift Supervisor advises Deputy as to proper procedures and interpretations of the law as necessary. Work is regularly reviewed for conformance to laws and office policies and regulations. A Deputy Sheriff may need to exercise judgment in the absence of direct supervision. Supervision Exercised:

Supervision of other employees is not a regular responsibility of this classification. In some cases the Senior Deputy at the scene may supervise Deputies and assist in training new Deputies. Essential Functions

A person employed in this classification must possess the capability to perform the following duties. The duties are essential functions requiring the skills and expertise needed to meet job objectives. Patrol roads, business and residential areas to enforce traffic and criminal laws; issue warnings or citations; make security checks and check for suspicious persons or vehicles. Respond to calls including major crimes, civil complaints, theft, assaults, family disputes and juvenile complaints. Maintain written records of all activities and prepare reports necessary for investigations, crime prevention, prosecution and office activities. Make arrests as necessary; handle suspects and prisoners; transport suspects and prisoners. Investigate traffic accidents, check for injured persons, administer emergency first aid, secure the scene and gather information from participants and witnesses. Investigate crimes and criminal complaints; preserve crime scenes; interview victims, witnesses and suspects; collect and mark evidence; conduct follow-up investigations and apprehensions. Serve subpoenas, warrants for arrest and other civil process; appear as a witness in court; may extradite and transport persons back to Linn County. Assist with search and rescue operations. Patrol waterways; enforce marine, fish and game laws. Develop and maintain proficiency with law enforcement equipment (firearms, radios, vehicles, impairment devices, cameras, etc.). Investigate unattended deaths resulting from natural, accidental or suicidal circumstances. Assist with crime prevention activities including surveillance and dissemination of information to the public. Answer public inquiries and provide general assistance as required. On a rotating basis, may be assigned to the Detective Division for more intensive felony and misdemeanor investigations. May have responsibilities related to receiving, identifying, preserving, transporting and testifying about evidence. Prepare for and prosecute criminal cases where the District Attorney will not appear. Develop and maintain effective working relationships with others and maintain regular attendance. Other Functions

Knowledge of Federal, State and local laws and ordinances; investigative procedures; and use of law enforcement equipment. Skill in the safe and efficient use of firearms and vehicles; ability to learn laws and procedures; ability to analyze situations quickly; ability to prepare clear reports; ability to handle emotionally stressful situations; ability to work well with others and the public. Experience, Education and Training

Graduation from a senior high school or GED certificate. Necessary Special Qualifications

Be a US citizen; be 21 years or older; pass background and physical/psychological exams; possess a valid driver\'s license; meet DPSST requirements; maintain First Aid and CPR certification; meet DPSST standards within one year of hire. Work is performed indoors and outdoors in all weather; vision requirements include corrected 20/30; ability to lift 50 pounds; other physical requirements apply. Background Check:

Finalists will undergo an extensive background investigation. Disqualifying factors include, but are not limited to: felony convictions; domestic violence or restraining orders; crimes of dishonesty; drug-related offenses; repeated misconduct; dishonorable discharge; petty larceny.
