Overview
The Deputy Sheriff performs a variety of routine and complex public safety work in the areas of patrol, civil service, investigations, traffic enforcement, corrections activity, and other related law enforcement activities. Pre-employment testing includes the ability to meet DPSST physical standards (ORPAT). All applicants must complete the exam with the National Testing Network. Essential Functions (in a typical work week) Patrols public roads, highways, federal lands, state lands, incorporated cities, and business areas to enforce traffic and criminal laws; patrols rivers and lakes in a patrol boat, enforcing water safety laws and regulations as assigned. Makes arrests, transports prisoners and patients under custody to institutions, courts, and on extraditions; transports arrested, sentenced, or detained individuals to and from the County Jail, juvenile facility, state institutions, and other facilities. Prepares detailed reports, affidavits, warrants, and citations; maintains records necessary for investigations, crime prevention, prosecution, and office procedures. Serves subpoenas, summonses, warrants for arrest, and other civil process papers. Appears as a witness in court and Grand Jury; demonstrates communication skills to testify on matters related to accidents, crimes, and investigations. Examines crime and accident scenes; preserves/collects evidence; interviews suspects, witnesses, and victims; provides follow-up investigation on certain crimes and investigations. Participates in Search and Rescue operations for property and persons. Performs courthouse and courtroom security when necessary. Works a variable rotation shift schedule; may involve limited backup support and/or limited electronic communications in indoor and outdoor environments; may encounter individuals who are violent, combative, under the influence, or with health concerns; position may require dealing with violent and combative individuals requiring physical effort. Communicates and interacts firmly yet courteously with the public and suspects in accordance with Sheriff’s Office policy; presents a consistent, objective approach in resolving conflicts and problems. Maintains CPR and first aid proficiency to assist the public when needed. Promotes public relations by participating in community events/public forums; informs the public on public safety concerns and answers inquiries regarding laws and ordinances. Responds to animal calls for service. Maintains proficiency in firearms qualifications and high driving skills under stress and non-stress conditions. Performs other related duties as assigned. Responsible for prudent use of assets and equipment; may involve program or policy development affecting the organization and its offerings. Positions at this level are not responsible for supervisory functions, but may occasionally orient and/or train new employees. Interpersonal Skills/Contacts
Frequent contact with other county departments and the public; interactions involve non-routine information and potential for positive or adverse consequences. Requires negotiation, tact, teamwork, sensitivity, and confidentiality. Formal presentations may be periodically made. Strong oral and written communication and interpersonal skills are essential. Working Conditions
Work environment includes varying conditions, potential hazards, irregular schedules, and interruptions; exposure to high noise, heat, cold, outdoors, electricity, chemicals, poor lighting, confinement, dangerous individuals, and contagious diseases. High risk of personal injury is present; ongoing assessment of safety is required. Physical Requirements
Moderate physical effort and handling of items; frequent lifting of light items and occasional heavier lifting (25–40 pounds); constant movement and long periods of standing. Driving is a major responsibility. All employees must be able to respond to a call and be at the Sheriff\'s Office within 45 minutes. A valid driver’s license is required as an essential function of this position. Education, Experience, and Certification/Licensure
Education and experience requirements typically include a high school diploma or GED, and up to one year of post-high school education or vocational training. Certification requirements may include Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) or equivalent academy within 1 year from date of hire, and Basic Police Certificate or ability to obtain within one year of appointment. Additional requirements: Must be 21 years of age. Possess or obtain a valid Oregon Driver’s License without suspension or revocation. Ability to meet DPSST physical standards (ORPAT). Ability to pass background, physical, and psychological examinations, and command staff oral board interview. Ability to work rotating shifts and alternate schedules. Proficiency with police vehicle operations, radio, radar, handgun and other department-approved equipment, Records Management Software, and related tools. Strong knowledge of modern law enforcement principles, procedures, laws, ordinances, and Wasco County geography. Ability to communicate effectively, establish relationships, exercise sound judgment, and follow instructions. Must be of good moral fitness as determined by a thorough background investigation. Ability to become CJIS certified and LEDS certified within specified timeframes. Ability to report to work in extreme weather even if county offices are closed. Equal Employment Opportunity
