Overview
The Broward Sheriff's Office is offering a hiring incentive for the Certified Deputy Sheriff position.
Candidates who successfully complete the selection process and are hired by the agency will receive a one-time payment of
$5000.00
at the beginning of their service with the Department of Detention. This initiative will be discontinued once allocated funds are no longer available.
The Broward Sheriff's Office is offering condensed testing for ALL Certified Deputy Sheriff applicants. Human Resources will schedule and coordinate the selection process within a one-week period to expedite the applicant process. Applicants are responsible for all travel expenses. If you are NOT interested in the condensed testing, please contact Human Resources directly at 954-321-4400 to opt out of the one-week testing and we will accommodate your schedule requirements accordingly.

Required Documents for Submitting the Online Application

Minimum Requirements
Minimum age of 18 years.
United States Citizen at time of application (F.S.S.943.13(2)).
High school diploma or equivalent. An evaluation of foreign high school diploma may be required.
Must possess a valid Basic Recruit Certificate for Corrections from the State of Florida Commission on Criminal Justice Standards and Training.
Basic Recruit Certificate must be submitted with the online application.
Must not have been convicted of any felony. All candidates must not have been convicted of any perjury or a false statement charge as an adult. All other arrests and convictions will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Must have good moral character as determined by a background investigation (F.S.S. 943.13).

If ever arrested, candidates must submit official court documents and police reports with the application. A written statement explaining the arrest and the outcome must also be attached to the application for review. Official court documents can be obtained from the Clerk of the Court in the county in which the incident occurred. Documents must be submitted with your application.
Must successfully pass the
PHYSICAL AGILITY
test.
Test results must be submitted with the application.
The
MODIFIED AGILITY
will be accepted for candidates who meet ALL of the following criteria:
Applicant must be currently certified and working in the position of a sworn Detention Deputy/Corrections Officer.
The applicant must have attended a comparable corrections academy either in the state of Florida or any other state.
The applicant must have verifiable proof of taking a Physical Agility Test that is measurable and comparable with the current Physical Agility Test administered by the Broward College Institute of Public Safety.
Copy of previous Physical Agility test results and the Modified Agility Test results must be attached to the applicant.
If claiming Veteran's Preference, candidates must provide a DD214 Member 4 form to the online application.
Must possess and maintain throughout employment a valid Florida driver license without any restrictions affecting job performance. Driver license must show current address. All candidates must submit with the application a Certified Department of Motor Vehicles "entire" driving history.
Florida driving histories can be obtained at any courthouse in Broward County. Three year, 7 year, and online Florida driving history records will not be accepted.
If you have possessed a driver's license in any other state in the past 10 years you will need to submit an "entire" driving history from that state. For non-Florida driving histories, please contact that state's division of motor vehicles.
The search date for all driving histories must be within one month of the date the application for employment is received by the Bureau of Human Resources.
Driving history records must be attached to the online application.

Physical Fitness Preparation Guide
Certified Detention Deputy Work includes the supervision and control of detainees; enforcement of security rules, regulations and procedures; and the provision of services and information to detainees. Tasks involve the intermittent performance of physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, running, climbing, and may involve the bending, pushing, and/or pulling of heavy objects in pursuit of detainees. The essential functions are representative and not all-inclusive, and management may assign duties not listed herein.
Maintains order over detainees; takes action to ensure safety and security of detainees, the public and staff.
Receives incoming detainees; conducts searches to detect concealed weapons and contraband.
Places detainees in cells; issues cleaning/sanitation supplies; transports laundry and bedding.
Escorts detainees to and from cells for court appearances, medical treatment, visitation, religious services, conferences, release and other activities.
Complies with booking and release procedures.
Picks up mail and commissary orders; inspects incoming mail and packages for contraband; delivers items to detainees.
Supervises detainee work details; maintains counts and records; updates detainee information in the computerized system.
May participate in the classification of new detainees; makes cell assignments.
Responds to inquiries regarding detainee status and procedures.
Secures facility keys; receives status and incident reports and instructions from staff.
Operates an agency vehicle as assigned.
Performs related duties as directed; adheres to CJSTC and FDLE guidelines and maintains required physical standards.
