Overview
The Plant Scientist II (Outdoors Controls) will collaborate closely with the marketing, formulations, and regulatory teams to develop new products for an outdoors plant pest solutions portfolio. They will partner with the R&D formulations team to set up and execute herbicide, fungicide, and nutrient solution efficacy trials at the Earth City Laboratory, and coordinate third-party efficacy testing with contract research organizations (CROs) and universities. This role provides technical expertise for registered products to Sales and Marketing while fostering collaboration with the Global Home Care team.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
Conduct and coordinate high-quality field trials, contributing to the development of herbicides and adjacent product categories.
Coordinate third-party efficacy testing with CROs and the professional pest control network.
Safely prepare and administer chemical treatment applications using spray equipment, according to product label instructions, for weed and disease control, and ensure worker and environmental safety.
Collect, analyze, and interpret experimental data across multiple projects involving multiple people.
Summarize field trial data for claims substantiation and provide recommendations, identifying development opportunities for product label expansion or further research.
Develop and write GEP protocols for new adjacent segments.
Review and update procedures in line with State EPA efficacy guidelines.
Collaborate with team members and other stakeholders on trial design and implementation.
Provide technical support and training; coordinate demonstration trials for training/education for internal and external stakeholders, and participate in site tours for internal and external groups.
Conduct literature reviews to support research initiatives and identify knowledge gaps.
Maintain accurate records of experimental protocols, procedures, and results.
Comply with all company policies and procedures.
Support outreach and product education activities.
Travel within the United States to contract research organizations, strategic partners, organized conferences, and meetings.
Other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
Ph.D. in Agricultural Sciences or related field; or Master’s degree in the same field with up to 2 years of practical field experience; or Bachelor’s degree with up to 5 years of relevant experience.
Experience conducting weed control trials to evaluate herbicides with respect to efficacy, crop tolerance, soil behavior, dose response, and other related experimental techniques.
Understanding of herbicides, fungicides, and nutrient solutions is a plus.
Preference will be given to applied field research experience.
Experience working independently.
Experience in Weed Science is a plus.
Required Skills
Experience conducting weed control trials to evaluate herbicides with respect to efficacy.
Must understand weed biology and management, experience with data collection and analysis, including statistical software.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and ability to work independently and collaboratively in a diverse environment.
Strong organizational and time management skills.
Project and leadership experience.
Knowledge of laboratory operations and safety requirements.
Thorough understanding of Good Laboratory Practices requirements.
PC skills (spreadsheets, word processing, presentations).
Ability to work well in a team environment.
Ability to communicate effectively with all levels within the organization.
Ability to manage projects independently.
A working knowledge of ARM is recommended but not necessary.
Experience in weed propagation, herbicides, fungicides, biocontrol and biostimulants is a plus.
Experience/qualification operating unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) and other digital tools is recommended but not required.
Work Environment Up to 80% laboratory/office environment and 20% travel.
