The Public Safety officer's primary purpose is to protect life and property. This is accomplished through a variety of tasks including preventive patrol, reporting suspicious persons or activities, reporting unsafe conditions, and the enforcement of University rules and regulations. Provide a security presence for dignitary visits and special events. They complete written reports on all security related matters and provide information and assistance to students, staff and the general public. They assist Newark Police, Fire, and Rescue Squad when necessary or as required.

Duties and Responsibilities

Preventive Patrol:

Conduct hourly patrols of Law School grounds and buildings.

Lock/Unlock buildings and classrooms according to daily operation schedule.

Perform Fire Extinguisher/AED and Narcan inspections.

Documentation and Reporting:

Create and maintain all departmental detailed documentation for reporting and investigative purposes, including: departmental incident reports, property reports, and work orders identifying safety concerns to be addressed by Facility Engineering staff.

Emergency Response:

Public Safety is the first responder to all emergency calls on campus, including medical emergencies (provide CPR, AED, and First Aid), fire alarms, bomb threats, intrusion alarms, and maintenance issues.

Customer Service:

Provide directions and escorts on and off campus.

Special Events and Dignitary Visits:

Provide security services at all visits of dignitaries, special events and sporting contests by directing and controlling pedestrian traffic, performing package inspections, and maintaining crowd control.

Required Qualifications High School diploma or GED. 1-3 years of relevant work experience, which may include experience in public safety, military, police or criminal justice coursework. Must be in good physical condition.

Desired Qualifications Community policing course, CPR, AED, First Aid certification, basic computer skills, knowledge of alarm systems, ability to write clear and concise reports, ability to clearly communicate directions and instructions, and the ability to work well under pressure.

Licenses and Certificates Valid New Jersey driver's license required with a good driving record.

Salary Range $15.49 - $17.60
