St. Charles County Government The purpose of this position is to perform courtroom security and bailiff/law enforcement tasks including maintaining order, conducting searches and surveillance in the courtroom or courthouse, enforcement of criminal laws, setting up facilities, assisting participants, and other duties as assigned. The work is performed under the supervision of the Sergeant-Court Services. This is a 24-hour facility. Must be available some weekends, overnights, and holidays. JOB OVERVIEW Responsibilities Ensures the safety and security of the court judge, court officers, the general public and prisoners at the 11th Judicial Circuit Court, Municipal Court, and Juvenile Justice Center. Ensures that all jurors, judge(s), attorneys and defendants are in the courtroom at trial time. Takes subjects into custody (convicted criminals, warrant/fugitive arrests, etc.) and transports them to a holding cell awaiting transfer to the detention center and ensures their safety. Enforces criminal laws, writes incident reports, and responds to fire/panic/duress alarms. Assists the Field Services Unit as needed. Requirements Education High school graduation or equivalent required. Associate degree in Criminal Justice or related field preferred. Certifications Must be Class A certified under Missouri Peace Officers Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) according to RSMO 590 prior to appointment (If you are presently enrolled in a Missouri P.O.S.T. – approved Police Academy, you may apply now and submit your MO POST Certificate upon graduation.) Must have a valid Driver's License, satisfactory driving record and be free from (and have no pending) felony convictions, or misdemeanor convictions related to domestic violence. Knowledge, skills and abilities At the time of hire, candidates must pass the following: drug screen, medical physical, background investigation/polygraph/psychological evaluation (waived for current County employees who have previously taken this exam within the past 5 years). Requires courteous, effective oral and written communication skills sometimes under adverse conditions. Considerable skill in the operation of law enforcement equipment including firearms. Considerable knowledge of federal, state, and local laws as they pertain to law enforcement. Examination Components The testing process consists of the following components: Written Exam Physical Agility Test Oral Board Interview Applicants must pass each component to move on to the next component. Scores from each component will be tabulated to determine the applicants’ final ratings, at which point candidates will be added to the Eligibility List accordingly. Eligibility Lists Candidates must meet all qualifications and pass all examination components to be added to the Eligibility List. Each examination component is weighted on the Eligibility List as follows: Oral Board Interview – 55 percent Written Exam – 45 percent Physical Agility Testing – Pass or fail Eligibility lasts for one year (unless the list is cancelled or examination procedures are revised). The Eligibility List may be utilized to fill similar law enforcement positions that become vacant. Candidates placed on the Eligibility List, who are later found to have employment or character histories which are incompatible with the high standards expected of St. Charles County Sheriff Deputies, may be removed from the Eligibility List following notification to the candidate.
