CLASSIFICATION TITLE:

Police Officer, Certified Purpose of Classification:

The purpose of this classification is to protect life and property, to respond to the needs of the general public, to deter criminal activity within the community, to enforce all city statutes, ordinances and the laws and regulations of the state, and to perform investigations, special details, and specific assignments within an assigned division. Responsibilities

Enforces all applicable codes, ordinances, laws and regulations (both traffic and criminal) to protect life and property, prevent crime, and promote security. Patrols designated areas by various means (motor vehicle, bicycle, motorcycle, golf carts, personal water craft, rescue boat, or on foot) to detect and deter criminal activity and traffic violations; inspects buildings/properties for security; responds to alarms; maintains high visibility in the community. Responds to calls relayed by dispatchers (e.g., domestic disputes, abuse, assaults, burglaries, thefts, fatalities, traffic accidents, welfare checks, etc.). Prevents/discovers crime; writes citations; pursues fleeing suspects; apprehends, arrests and processes individuals as appropriate; assists in booking inmates; conducts field sobriety tests; processes evidence; transports arrestees/prisoners as required. Conducts preliminary and advanced investigations; obtains warrants; interviews victims, complainants and witnesses; gathers information and evidence; secures crime scenes; prepares investigative reports; participates in court activities; testifies in judicial proceedings. Performs rescue functions at accidents, emergencies, and disasters; may involve lifting, carrying, evacuating, administering medical aid, or extinguishing small fires. Provides assistance and backup to other officers; available for emergency response on a twenty-four-hour basis; assists other law enforcement or public service agencies as appropriate. Follows safety procedures and uses safety equipment; drives safely under various conditions and emergencies; Inspects and maintains assigned police vehicle, equipment, weaponry, and related items; maintains cleanliness and operational readiness; requests service as needed. Performs research functions; searches criminal histories and location data via computer systems; utilizes driver’s license files, pawnshop databases, and video systems. Responds to complaints and questions related to law enforcement; mediates disputes; provides information and guidance; communicates effectively via telephone and radio. Maintains positive public relations; provides education on laws, crime prevention, and related topics. Maintains records, logs, and reference materials; prepares and completes various forms, reports, and documents related to duties. Attends shift meetings and training; stays current with policies, procedures, codes, and case law; participates in professional development. Operates a range of standard and specialized equipment used in law enforcement and computer-based systems. Additional Functions

May perform special operations/detail activities (e.g., crime prevention/analysis, SRO, drug task force, traffic enforcement, school liaison, etc.). Coordinates special events with city departments and police agencies; assists with permits and traffic planning; maintains related databases. Acts as liaison with school personnel, families, and students; may deliver law-related education and crisis management training. Coordinates with loss prevention and assists during community activities and crime-prevention programs. Performs other related duties as required. Qualifications

High school diploma or GED; one (1) year of prior law enforcement experience; some public relations experience preferred. Must possess and maintain a valid South Carolina driver’s license; must be at least 21 years of age; must be a U.S. citizen. Must possess and maintain: South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy Basic Law Enforcement certification, CPR certification, and firearm qualification. May be required to attain and maintain additional certifications related to assignment. Competencies
