Overview
In collaboration with the Superintendent of Catholic Schools and the Diocesan Director of Finance, the Controller is intended to be a business partner with each school leader, and a direct supervisor of all three bookkeepers. This position oversees the assets and financial auditing of Bishop Carroll Catholic High School, Kapaun Mt Carmel Catholic High School, Trinity Catholic Jr/Sr. High School, and their related food service operations. Specifically, this individual directs capital projects; develops, supervises, and monitors annual operating budgets; leads internal audits, is responsible for promoting fiscal health and accountability, is the final signor for miscellaneous payroll adjustments and serves as the direct liaison with outside accounting and payroll service providers. The Controller of Wichita Catholic Secondary Schools reports directly to the Superintendent of Catholic Schools and the Diocesan Director of Finance.
Core Responsibilities
Business Partnership – Supports the High School Presidents as their financial partner by providing reporting, analysis, and counsel. Works with Presidents to create annual budgets for their schools. Works with Presidents and Chancery offices to create 5 year capital expenditure programs.
Bookkeeper Supervision – Directs oversight of three high school bookkeepers, ensuring consistency of practices across all schools, training, and accountability.
Financial Statement Close Process – Oversees the monthly close and reporting cycle. This includes monthly calls with school leadership/bookkeepers and Superintendent.
Payroll Oversight – Approves and signs off on supplemental and miscellaneous payroll; ensures PTO approvals and timesheet cutoffs are enforced and done timely at each school.
Vendor & Systems – Approves recurring obligations (insurance, credit card, deposit logs, etc.); partners with outside service providers and vendors to streamline processes.
Audit – Acts as the primary contact for the external audit, delegating work as necessary to the responsible teams.
Compliance: Oversees internal controls for the accounting process.
Liaison to all external finance and payroll providers – Acts as the direct point of contact for all finance, accounting, and payroll providers, partnering with them on process improvements and overall execution.
Qualifications
Experienced as an auditor, internal control, or compliance
Proven supervisory and job performance coaching experience.
Comfortable serving as liaison with external providers
Strong communicator, able to bridge Presidents, bookkeepers, and diocesan leadership.
Values mission alignment with Catholic education.
Requirements
Practicing Catholic in good standing, an active steward in one’s parish and committed to the mission and teachings of the Catholic Church.
Bachelor’s degree in finance or accounting at a minimum
Eight-ten years’ experience in finance, accounting, and auditing with comparable managerial and supervisory experience
Proficient in accounting software and financial statement analysis.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills along with strong analytical, problem-solving and organizational skills.
Outstanding leadership and interpersonal skills with the competence to manage staff.
Must exhibit a strict sense of confidentiality and professionalism.
Must be available to work occasional evenings and weekends. Travel is required to Hutchinson, within the city of Wichita and on occasion to Southeast Kansas.
Physical Demands/Work Environment The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, or sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to talk or hear. It is required that the employee have sufficient clarity of speech and hearing to communicate effectively. This position requires the ability to occasionally lift office products and supplies, up to 20 pounds. The work environment will consist of normal office conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.
