Overview
Summer Street Advisors is a boutique commercial real estate consulting firm located in Westport, CT. Our clients include Banks, Private Equity Funds, Hedge Funds, Asset Managers, Developers and Family Offices that provide debt and/or invest across the United States in all commercial real estate asset classes. We seek an Associate to support our underwriting, asset management, and due diligence efforts. This role assists debt and equity underwriting assignments and the preparation of high-quality deliverables for SSA clients. Job Summary Reporting to the Director of Underwriting, the Associate will participate in the due diligence and underwriting process. We are targeting candidates with 3–6 years of experience in credit underwriting, asset management, or portfolio management within commercial real estate. In this position, you will support underwriting and due diligence teams through financial modeling, market research, deal analysis, and client deliverable preparation. This role builds on a solid underwriting foundation and offers opportunities to contribute independently while developing leadership skills over time. The Associate will mentor junior team members and help drive timely deal execution with minimal supervision. You will collaborate closely with internal partners and clients to underwrite debt and equity transactions across CRE asset classes, prioritizing efficiency, accuracy, and collaboration. Responsibilities Support underwriting and credit analysis for new loan and equity opportunities Conduct in-depth market research to support underwriting conclusions Assist with cash flow modeling, financial analyses, and modeling enhancements Review and summarize third-party reports (appraisals, environmental, property condition, zoning, seismic, flood, insurance, credit) Assess sponsor/tenant creditworthiness and ability to execute business plans Abstract lease terms and summarize key tenant/covenant risks Generate rent and sales comparables using REIS, CoStar, and other data sources Import deal information and organize documents within Summer Street’s file structure Attend underwriting kickoff, due diligence, and status calls Maintain due diligence checklists, question logs, and deliverable timelines Prepare investment memos and ASRs for client credit/investment committees Develop a broad understanding of CRE fundamentals, trends, and market metrics relevant to assigned deal types Support the Director of Underwriting in mentoring, training, and providing feedback to junior analysts Contribute to site inspections and write site inspection reports Assist in new business initiatives and cross-functional projects Travel for site inspections as needed Maintain relationships with clients and internal team members Qualifications & Core Competencies Bachelor’s degree in Real Estate, Finance, Economics, or related field required 3-6 years of credit underwriting, portfolio management, or asset management within CRE Strong proficiency with MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) Advanced Excel skills; financial modeling experience; Argus knowledge a plus Excellent written and verbal communication, and presentation skills Detail-oriented with strong organizational and project management abilities Ability to manage multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment Analytical thinker with problem-solving capabilities Willingness to perform site visits and occasional travel Preferred Skills Experience with underwriting or portfolio management for diverse CRE assets (office, retail, multifamily, industrial, hospitality) Familiarity with underwriting metrics (LTV, DSCR) and lending processes Experience with data room management and document control Knowledge of real estate capitalization metrics and due diligence workflows What We Offer Base salary with room for career advancement 401(k) plan with company match (up to 3% with immediate vesting) 12 paid holidays and 12 days of PTO in the first year Ongoing training and professional development Mentorship and access to senior leadership Networking opportunities and career development Team events, snacks, and beverages Location:
