General Assistant – Virginia Beach City Public Schools
Instructional support work in providing assistance to teachers in the daily management and instruction of students. An employee in this class performs clerical and instructional tasks to relieve teachers of routine activities and to help carry out daily classroom activities. The work involves observing and reporting on the behavior and learning of students, and may be assigned to a pre‑kindergarten, kindergarten, special classroom, or a computer learning center/lab. The employee closely monitors the needs of children including personal needs, physical help, and occasional restraint, following detailed procedures.
Essential Tasks
Follow instructional schedule developed with personnel.
Reinforce skills taught by the classroom teacher with small and large groups.
Assist with instructional activities (e.g., read to groups, provide library assistance, record information, listen to students).
Help students with special assignments or academic problems.
Work with groups of assigned students.
Encourage safety, work, and study habits.
Assist with daily routine tasks, such as cafeteria duty, bus duty, money collection, hall duty, checking students’ work.
Prepare instructional materials as requested.
Assist in fire drills and other building security procedures.
Perform learning tasks with students—review lessons, topics, and exercises; demonstrate or explain lessons, ask questions, prompt students for answers, use supplementary materials.
Monitor activities in drawing, writing, independent study, and other classroom activities.
Escort students on field trips and at school; assist in physical and playground activities; accompany children to restrooms, assist with toileting if necessary.
Maintain bulletin boards, student attendance records, lunch tickets, health charts, and classroom supplies.
May work with students requiring individual or close attention.
Perform related work as required.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities General knowledge of classroom teaching practices, methods, and techniques; ability to maintain confidential files, compile reports, and deal effectively with students and teachers; skill in the use of classroom equipment; ability to operate standard office, word, and data processing equipment; ability to establish effective working relationships with teachers, parents, students, and associates.
Education & Experience Required: High School Diploma or GED.
Title I Assistants Only:
Minimum 48 college credits or documentation of passing the Paraprofessional Assessment test, or an Associate’s Degree. Some experience working with children is preferred.
Physical & Special Requirements Use of sensory skills for communication and interaction; frequent sitting, walking, bending, grasping, repetitive motion, and reaching. Occasional standing, stooping, crouching, kneeling. Ability to lift up to 20 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds rarely. Reasonable accommodations may be made.
Special Requirements:
Possession of a valid driver’s license. Regular and reliable attendance is essential.
Compensation Entry‑level hourly rate: $18.72. Compensation based on job‑related creditable years of full‑time experience. The entry‑level rate will be awarded at hire and adjusted upon verification of experience. Benefits include health insurance, paid life and sick/annual leave, tuition reimbursement, professional development, and membership in the Virginia Retirement System. Unified Experience Based Step Pay Scale: U10. FTE 1.000. Start date 2025‑2026 school year.
