Description of Work Under the general direction of the Director of Finance, the Accounting Supervisor oversees, implements, and supervises accounting in the centralized accounting office for Muskegon County. This employee assesses current County processes and implements improvements where necessary. The Accounting Supervisor assists auditors examining the County's accounting system; monitors the financial systems and the financial portion of grants; and supervises a staff of professional, technical and clerical employees. This position is required to exercise considerable independent judgment and initiative; however, very critically important and sensitive determinations and decisions may require guidance and coordination at a higher level. This employee applies rules, regulations and policies with a high degree of professionalism and independence throughout the accounting process and performs other related duties as required.
Required Minimum Entrance Qualifications
Have a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Accounting or Finance or closely related field;
Have a minimum of four (4) years of progressively responsible full-time work experience in governmental accounting, which includes considerable use of computer spreadsheet applications and at least one (1) year in a supervisory or lead capacity.
Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and/or Certified Government Financial Manager (CGFM) credential preferred and may substitute for one year of required experience.
Physical Conditions / Work Location PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES An employee in this class performs generally sedentary work requiring the occasional lifting of objects weighing thirty-five (35) pounds or less. Extended periods of computer and screen use are required.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS This employee generally works in the Accounting Department, although travel throughout the County may be required.
Evaluation Content The selected candidate must take a post-offer medical examination (including back screen and complete physical) and drug screening test given by a County appointed physician before the first day of employment. An offer of employment is contingent upon the results of the medical examination and drug screening test. Applicants for County employment may be subject to a post-offer criminal background check, depending on the nature and assignment of the position. When such check is conducted, an offer of employment is contingent upon the results of the criminal background check. Appointees must satisfactorily complete a probationary period before the appointment will be considered permanent.
