Overview

Financial Resource Specialist, Patient Access, Rockford, Days, 80 hrs / 2 wks. Location: Javon Bea Riverside. Schedule: 8:00a - 5:00p Monday – Friday. Hours may vary based on patient need. The Financial Resource Specialist position requires extensive knowledge of Mercyhealth financial guidelines, collection policies, and government regulations related to billing and collections. The specialist will liaise with clinic and hospital locations to ensure financial policies are adhered to, greet patients or family members, and assist with questions about insurance coverage, financial assistance, billing, or payment options. They will have knowledge of the revenue cycle from registration through collection, billing, coding, and denial processes and will counsel patients on government programs and other financial resources as needed. They may assist with presumptive eligibility, complex estimates, and follow up to ensure financial resources are in place to cover care.

Responsibilities

Follows and administers Mercyhealth financial policies and guidelines; maintains knowledge of collection laws, statement cycles, and bad debt process.

Maintains knowledge of registration and cash drawer processes; follows frontline workflows for payment posting and cash handling.

Researches and audits patient accounts to determine balances due from third parties or patients.

Counsels patients on billing concerns, account balances, service costs/estimates, and available insurance resources.

Establishes and follows up on payment plans; researches accounts, processes refunds, and applies discounts where appropriate.

Communicates with physicians, care staff, and reception regarding insurance status, medical urgency, and billing/insurance issues.

Identifies and resolves billing discrepancies; navigates systems to review accounts and ensures payment.

Maintains knowledge of government and commercial plans, managed care contracts, and reimbursement rates; assists with presumptive eligibility and charity care applications as needed.

Assists patients with copay and drug replacement assistance; screens for charity care eligibility; verifies insurance eligibility and benefits; follows up on coverage.

Monitors work queues and resolves outstanding balance issues; contacts patients to collect payment or arrange financial resources; responds to inquiries via in person, mail, phone, and/or email.

Acts as liaison between patient, payers, Mercyhealth partners; adheres to documentation standards and maintains accurate notes.

Provides training and mentoring; participates in mandatory educational programs and opportunities for personal growth.

Qualifications

Graduate of high school preferred.

Two years of customer service and/or collections experience.

Knowledge of reimbursement practices for commercial and government payers preferred.

Medical terminology preferred.
