Summary The Commercial Lending Officer plays a key role in fulfilling Tropical Financial Credit Union's mission to guide members through the financial marketplace. This position focuses on growing the Credit Union's commercial lending portfolio by promoting, selling, and processing a range of business loan products while ensuring compliance with internal policies and regulatory requirements. This role emphasizes building strong community relationships to identify and meet the financial needs of local businesses, fostering trust and long‑term partnerships.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities Business Development and Relationship Management
Uphold Tropical Financial Credit Union’s Service Standards of Excellence in all interactions.
Develop and maintain relationships with key community stakeholders, such as business owners, professionals, and vendors, to promote the Credit Union's services.
Identify and target market segments to establish the Credit Union as a trusted provider of commercial financial services.
Actively seek new commercial lending opportunities by conducting prospect interviews and preparing comprehensive loan packages.
Represent the Credit Union in the community, fostering relationships to support business growth and financial well‑being.
Loan Management
Conduct financial analysis to assess creditworthiness and structure loans that meet member needs while aligning with Credit Union policies.
Manage a portfolio of commercial loans, ensuring compliance with loan terms, timely receipt of financial information, and covenant adherence.
Monitor loan repayment activities and address delinquent accounts as needed.
Prepare and present loan applications to the Business Loan Committee, ensuring accurate and complete documentation.
Compliance and Risk Management
Ensure adherence to sound lending practices and compliance with applicable state and federal regulations.
Maintain accurate and complete loan files to meet internal audit and regulatory standards.
Assist management with audit preparation and promptly address audit exceptions.
Stay informed on economic trends, regulatory updates, and competitive factors affecting the Credit Union’s commercial lending activities.
Collaborate and cross‑sell: partner with internal teams to identify cross‑sell opportunities for consumer and business products.
BSA Compliance
Every employee must uphold the Credit Union’s compliance with the Bank Secrecy Act and anti‑money laundering policies.
Complete BSA and OFAC courses at least annually.
Maintain knowledge of BSA, CIP, USA Patriot Act, OFAC, Fair Lending, and the Credit Card Act.
Comply with all TFCU policies and procedures to ensure regulatory compliance.
Qualifications To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, or a related field (equivalent experience may be considered).
5–8 years of commercial lending experience, including expertise in commercial mortgage, equipment, and inventory lending.
Knowledge of Credit Union policies, consumer and mortgage lending products, and federal lending regulations is preferred.
Skills and Competencies
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Exceptional interpersonal and relationship‑building abilities, with experience engaging with diverse stakeholders.
Self‑motivated and capable of working independently with minimal supervision.
Analytical thinking with the ability to assess complex financial situations and make informed recommendations.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and lending software.
Ability to facilitate presentations for internal and external audiences.
High integrity and professionalism in all interactions.
Contributes to continuous improvement projects, training, and reporting.
Strong time‑management, problem‑solving, and prioritization skills.
Collaborative team player with motivation and initiative.
Attention to detail and confidentiality when handling sensitive information.
Flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and overtime as needed.
Physical Demands Regular requirement to talk or hear, stand, walk, sit, use hands, occasionally lift up to 10 pounds. Requires close vision and focus. Reasonable accommodations may be made.
