Overview The primary responsibility is performing technical, skilled and semi‑skilled work functions related to the installation, repair and maintenance of water meters, automated meter reading equipment (AMR) and associated equipment. Tasks include installing, removing and repairing meters, cutoff valves, valves boxes, lids, plumbing and operational troubleshooting, testing meter accuracy and pressure, and maintaining proper records.

Responsibilities

Install, remove, repair, and maintain water meters, cutoff valves, and related equipment; replace meter boxes and lids as required.

Perform water flow and pressure tests and validate meter accuracy according to established standards.

Maintain detailed logs of meter numbers, readings, work performed, and repairs.

Operate heavy equipment such as dump trucks, backhoes, forklifts, jackhammers, air compressors, shovels, and other tools used in meter installation and maintenance.

Transport, load, and unload equipment and materials while operating a motor vehicle.

Conduct general maintenance on machinery, equipment, and tools to keep them operating safely and efficiently.

Assist with inventory management of departmental meters, equipment, tools, supplies, and materials.

Prepare, read, and complete forms, correspondence, reports, work orders, maps, blueprints, and manuals.

Communicate clearly with supervisors, coworkers, city departments, customers, and the public via phone, radio, and face‑to‑face.

Use a personal computer for data entry, retrieval, and reporting, employing word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and email.

Respond to emergencies and be available for on‑call, weekend, holiday, special event, and overtime responsibilities.

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED supplemented by vocational/technical training in Mechanics, Meter Repair, or a related field.

At least two years of experience with the maintenance, operation, installation, repair, or testing of water meters/AMR equipment, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Valid Georgia Driver's License.

GA Water Distribution System Operator certification, or the ability to obtain it within six months.

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret scientific, technical, and mathematical documents.

Strong verbal communication and presentation skills.

Additional Functions Provide assistance or backup coverage to other employees or departments as needed and perform other related duties.

Language Skills

Read, analyze, and interpret scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.

Respond to inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or the community.

Write speeches and articles in prescribed style and format.

Effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.

Mathematical Skills

Work with probability, statistics, plane and solid geometry, trigonometry, fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions.

Apply mathematical concepts to practical situations.

Reasoning Ability

Define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

Interpret extensive technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and handle abstract and concrete variables.

Certifications, Licenses, Registrations High school diploma or GED, with the ability to obtain a GA Water Distribution System Operator certification within six months. Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia Driver's License.

Physical Demands The role requires frequent lifting (up to 10 pounds) and includes standing, walking, sitting, handling, reaching, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and using hands and arms. Vision abilities required include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment.

Work Environment The work environment includes exposure to toxic chemicals, extreme cold, fumes, airborne particles, vibration, loud noise, and outdoor weather conditions. Typical noise level is loud.

ADA Compliance Tasks require the regular and sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work (20‑50 pounds). Sensory requirements include color perception and sound discrimination. Environmental factors may include high pressure gas & water lines, fiber optics, electric currents, poisonous plants, insects, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature extremes, and noise.
