To help support the farrier work within the Animal Health Center. Responsibilities
Assist the podiatrist with farrier services for client owned and CVM owned horses, donkeys, and mules. Routine trimming and maintaining the hoof care of all CVM owned horses will be a responsibility of this position. Routine hoof trimming and trimming to prepare for shoeing. Shoeing of livestock when directed by the faculty. Restrain animals for hoof care. Cleaning and organization of the farrier shop, inventory, ordering, pulling shoes and preparing feet for diagnostic imaging, and assisting with documentation for medical records and billing. Minimum Qualifications
Strong interest in animal care and learning farrier work. Experience in farriery is encouraged but not required. Experience with equine handling and restraint. Ability to work independently and manage time effectively. Physical ability to perform farrier tasks. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies. Ability to analyze and solve problems. Computer and photography skills. Working Conditions and Physical Effort
Requires some heavy lifting, and some work may be performed outdoors or in areas that are not climate controlled. Routine deadlines; usually sufficient lead time; variance in work volume seasonal and predictable; priorities can be anticipated; some interruptions are present; involves occasional exposure to demands and pressures from persons other than immediate supervisor. Job frequently requires sitting, reaching, talking, hearing, and handling objects with hands. Job frequently requires standing, walking, stooping/kneeling/crouching, and lifting up to 50 pounds. The job does require the applicant to lift hooves and stand squatted and bowed for moderate periods of time.
