Overview
The Legal Aid Society's Civil Practice's Housing Justice Unit – Tenant Defense seeks an experienced lawyer to join as Supervising Attorney in the Brooklyn Neighborhood Office. The Supervising Attorney will work with the Director of Housing and the supervisory team to manage day-to-day operations of the Housing Justice Program. The unit handles eviction defense and affirmative litigation, including holdovers, nonpayment proceedings, HPs, Housing Authority administrative hearings, and state and federal court appeals. The Supervising Attorney will supervise Housing Attorneys and Paralegal Casehandlers and coordinate with the Government Benefits Supervising Attorney to oversee housing-related government benefits work for clients seeking income supports from city, state, and federal programs.
The role includes supervising staff, providing leadership, guiding legal strategy, developing training, and maintaining relationships with stakeholders in the legal, court, and service communities. The Supervising Attorney will also coordinate with the Brooklyn Neighborhood Office and citywide initiatives related to housing and government benefits. They will participate in practice-wide management decisions and ensure high-quality representation and client service.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Housing Supervision Duties
Supervise, mentor, and train staff attorneys and paralegals
Monitor and maintain a high standard of representation and client service
Collaborate with the Director of Housing, Housing Coordinators, and the housing, benefits, and grants management teams
Participate in planning for benefits work within the housing practice
Identify needs and resources for the Brooklyn Neighborhood Office and participate in management responsibilities
Coordinate intake
Represent clients in local, state, and federal administrative and court proceedings
Develop and maintain community relationships with organizations, advocates, government agencies, elected officials, and the courts
Reinforce and maintain staff accountability
Analyze legal issues, develop strategy, supervise implementation, and develop impact and/or affirmative litigation in coordination with leadership
Conduct community education, training, and outreach to promote the work of the office and the Civil Practice
Represent the Civil Practice and Legal Aid in the community
Conduct off-site intake, including during evening hours as needed
Team Development and Supervision
Schedule hours, assign work, approve time off and remote work requests in line with LAS policy
Attend management meetings and trainings and follow employment policies
Supervise staff with equity and inclusion in the workplace
Provide performance feedback, coaching, and discipline as needed
Identify training and development opportunities and ensure mandatory trainings are completed
Professional Development and Other Duties as Assigned
Participate in continuous professional development
Promote an inclusive work environment and awareness of bias
Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications Required qualifications:
Admission to the NYS Bar and willingness to apply for admission to the federal courts (S.D.N.Y., E.D.N.Y., Second Circuit) as needed
Minimum of three years of legal practice
Minimum of one year of supervisory and management experience preferred (or relevant leadership experience)
Proficiency in languages other than English is desirable but not required
Preferred qualifications:

Experience in government benefits required
Experience litigating in various judicial and administrative forums

Salary and Benefits The salary range represents a good faith estimate. Actual salary offered may vary based on factors including knowledge, skills, experience, and union salary steps.
Salary Range: $99,444 - $163,507
Generous benefits package including health insurance, paid vacation, disability, and life insurance
PSLF and state loan forgiveness program eligibility; information available via studentaid.gov and hesc.ny.gov
