HOW THIS POSITION CONTRIBUTES TO WHAT WE DO:

The Sunday School Teacher nurtures children to connect, grow and serve in their faith journey as disciples of Jesus Christ and assists in equipping parents to help them along the way.

General Description The Sunday School Teacher/Nursery Assistant is an essential member of the Children’s Ministry team. The teacher helps the Children’s Ministry Director in developing, coordinating, and supporting the faith development of children (preschool through elementary school age). This person is excited about Christian faith and has an ability to engage well with children and families to share that faith in a manner that is mutually respectful, supports personal growth, and creates a welcoming environment. With an awareness of the importance of being a Christian example, the teacher demonstrates a strong commitment as a disciple of Jesus Christ and high standards in attitude, outlook and morals.

Essential Responsibilities

Maintain a safe environment, including adherence to and annual acknowledgement and review of the AUMC Ministry Safe Policy and Procedures for the Protection of Children and Youth.

In coordination with the Children’s Ministry Director, implement Sunday School curriculum during worship and Sunday School.

Interact with children through age-appropriate lessons, games, play and prayer.

Arrive at the appointed time on Sunday Mornings (8:30 a.m.) and stay until after the second (contemporary) service, usually around 12:15 pm, or longer, if needed. Additionally, provide childcare during MomCo meetings on the 1st Tuesday of each month (5:00-8:00pm).

Assist in setting up classrooms before Sunday School, i.e., set up tables, arrange chairs, open blinds, and provide needed supplies. Generally ensure the room is prepared for the children. Assist with clean up at the end of class, including returning chairs and blinds to original positions.

Welcome families and assist with registration of children at sign in and sign out times.

Assist with set up and take down of registration table/chair(s).

Critical Skills

A practical knowledge of Christian discipleship, education and child development.

Knowledge of faith-based curricula commonly used for Sunday School.

Strong interpersonal communication skills.

Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team, as well as the ability to lead and take the initiative.

Ability to work effectively with children and parents.

Openness to learning.

Interest in and love for God’s children of all ages.

Ability to work collaboratively with others.

Sensitivity to confidential matters of the church.

Ability to navigate the sensitivities of working with parents.

Education/Experience Requirements

High school diploma required

Early Childhood education units preferred

Experience working with children in a classroom setting

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $20.00 – $25.00 per hour, depending on experience

Expected hours: 2 – 6 per week

Work Location: In person
