Overview The Volvo Certified Marine Technician is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining Volvo Penta marine engines (gasoline and diesel, including models like D6-D13 series or AQ120B) and associated systems on boats and watercraft. This role involves performing routine maintenance, warranty repairs, and complex troubleshooting to ensure optimal performance and safety of marine vessels. The technician works in marinas, boatyards, or service centers, often collaborating with other marine professionals.

Key Responsibilities

Diagnosis and Repair: Expertly troubleshoot and diagnose issues with Volvo Penta marine engines, transmissions, drivetrains, and related systems (e.g., fuel, electrical, cooling, and hybrid/diesel technology).

Perform repairs on inboard, outboard, and inboard/outboard engines, including warranty repairs and service bulletins.

Conduct engine overhauls, rebuilds, and component replacements as needed.

Routine Maintenance: Perform scheduled maintenance tasks (e.g., 100-hour service, oil changes, filter replacements, and lubrication).

Inspect and test engines, generators, stabilizers, and other systems to ensure compliance with manufacturer standards.

Installation and Rigging: Assist with or lead the installation of new Volvo Penta engines, including rigging, plumbing for cooling/fuel systems, and wiring for electronics, controls, and gauges. (Arraysweb:1⁊Configure and test systems like Volvo Penta Assisted Docking for optimal performance.)

Testing and Quality Assurance: Test boat equipment and systems (e.g., propulsion, electrical, and plumbing) to verify functionality post-repair or maintenance.

Drive and dock vessels to assess performance during sea trials.

Administrative Duties: Document all maintenance and repair tasks performed, including service reports and warranty documentation. Prepare repair quotations, manage spare parts inventory, and coordinate with customers or service managers.

Qualifications

Education and Certification: Certification as a Volvo Penta Marine Technician (typically through Volvo Penta training programs or accredited institutions like UTI). Completion of marine mechanic training or apprenticeship programs focusing on marine engines and systems. High school diploma or equivalent; additional technical training in diesel or hybrid engine technology is a plus.

Experience: 2+ years of experience working with marine engines, preferably Volvo Penta models (e.g., D6-D13 series, AQ120B). Familiarity with inboard, outboard, and inboard/outboard systems, as well as electrical and fuel system troubleshooting.

Skills: Strong diagnostic and problem-solving skills for complex marine engine issues. Proficiency with marine diagnostic tools, software, and testing equipment. Knowledge of marine electrical systems, hybrid technology, and Volvo Penta’s proprietary systems (e.g., Assisted Docking). Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and service bulletins. Excellent communication skills for customer interactions and teamwork.

Physical Requirements: Ability to work in confined spaces, lift heavy equipment, and perform tasks in various weather conditions. Comfortable working on or around water, including driving and docking vessels.

Work Environment Full-time position, typically 40 hours per week (Monday–Friday), with occasional overtime or weekend work during peak boating seasons. Work is performed in marinas, boatyards, or service shops, often involving exposure to water, noise, and marine chemicals. May require travel to customer locations or docks for on-site repairs.
