Border Patrol Agent (BPA) GL-5/7 grade levels. Duty assignments available at the time of offer may include the Southwest Border, including prioritized locations. U.S. Border Patrol determines duty assignments at the time of offer based on operational needs, which may or may not align with candidates’ first-choice preferences. Relocation may be required. — Newly appointed Border Patrol Agents (BPA) will be offered a $20,000 incentive. The first $10,000 is paid upon successfully completing training at the Border Patrol Academy, and the remainder after completing a three-year service agreement. New BPAs accepting a
prioritized location
(Sierra Blanca, Presidio, Sanderson, Comstock, Freer, and Hebbronville, TX; Lordsburg, NM; or Ajo, AZ) will be eligible for an additional $10,000. Applicants currently in pre-employment do not need to reapply to be eligible for the incentive. Annual Base Salary for newly appointed BPAs varies by grade level: GL-5/GL-7: $49,739 - $89,518 per year Duty location impacts pay rates; locality pay for federal law enforcement is higher in some locations. A fully trained BPA may be eligible for up to an additional 25% of base pay per the BPA Pay Reform Act of 2014. This is a career ladder position with progression through GL-5, GL-7, GL-9, GS-11, and GS-12. Promotion to the next higher grade level (without reapplying) occurs after successfully completing 52 weeks in each grade level. Border Patrol Agents are eligible for a range of federal employment benefits, including health and dental insurance, leave, and participation in the Thrift Savings Plan (retirement plan similar to a traditional Roth 401(k)). Duties and Responsibilities
As a BPA, you will be part of a 60,000+ workforce protecting the American people by safeguarding borders, deterring illicit activity, and supporting the nation’s economic prosperity. Duties include: Detecting and questioning individuals suspected of violating immigration and customs laws and inspecting documents to determine citizenship or violations. Preventing and apprehending undocumented noncitizens and smugglers at or near the borders, using surveillance from covert positions and infrared scopes during night operations. Interpreting and following tracks, marks, and other physical evidence of illegal entry or contraband. Performing farm checks, building checks, traffic checks, city patrols, and transportation checks. Patrolling the international boundary and coastal waterways using vehicles, horses, vessels, watercraft, off-road vehicles, ATVs, snowmobiles, and motorcycles to accomplish the USBP Mission. qualifications: Experience: One year of general work experience demonstrating leadership, decision-making, and composure under stress; ability to learn regulations and techniques; ability to gather information through questioning and documentation review. Education Substitution: A bachelor’s degree or successful completion of a full four-year course of study in any field from an accredited college or university. Combination of Experience and Education: A combination of general work experience and college education, calculated from resume and transcripts. GL-7 grade level
qualifications: Experience: One year of specialized work experience showing ability to make sound judgments and decisions in the use of firearms, interact effectively with the public in law enforcement matters, and analyze information rapidly. This may include activities such as criminal code enforcement, arrests, or related duties. The experience will be applied to make arrests, use firearms prudently, and maintain contacts with informants. Education Substitution: A bachelor’s degree with Superior Academic Achievement (high class standing, GPA 3.0+ or honors) or one year of graduate-level education in a related field. Combination of Experience and Education: Calculated from resume and transcripts. Note: Previous law enforcement or military experience may qualify at higher levels (GL-9/GS-11). Age Restriction: You must be referred for selection before reaching the age limit for law enforcement retirement; certain exceptions apply for current or prior federal civilian law enforcement experience. Veterans’ Preference: Veterans’ Preference eligible applicants may qualify for an excepted service Veterans Recruitment Appointment (VRA); age restrictions may not apply. Formal Training: After hire, training at the U.S. Border Patrol Academy in Artesia, NM for about six months.
