Flexible schedule Opportunity for advancement Training & development We are seeking Kirundi Over-the-Phone Interpreters (OPI) to support our USCIS contract. Kirundi, a Bantu language spoken in Burundi and neighboring countries (Tanzania, DR Congo, Rwanda), is a rare but important East African language often needed for asylum and immigration cases. Responsibilities:
Provide real-time Kirundi - English telephonic interpretation for USCIS interviews, hearings, and asylum proceedings. Interpret with accuracy, neutrality, and professionalism in sensitive immigration and legal contexts. Maintain confidentiality and comply with USCIS/DHS interpreter ethics standards. Handle both scheduled assignments and urgent/surge interpretation requests. Participate in compliance training, QA audits, and professional development. Qualifications:
Native or near-native fluency in Kirundi and English (knowledge of Kinyarwanda is a plus, as they are closely related). 2+ years of professional interpreting experience (immigration, asylum, legal, NGO, medical, or community preferred). Strong understanding of interpreter ethics, confidentiality, and impartiality. Cultural familiarity with Burundian and East African contexts. Must be a U.S. Citizen or permanent resident eligible for Tier 3/Tier 5 federal clearance. Compensation & Benefits:
