About the Foundation
The Thomas Jefferson Foundation preserves Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson, and engages audiences with Jefferson’s world and ideas. Monticello is a National Historic Landmark, UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Site of Conscience.
Responsibilities
Collect, process, and archive oral histories in collaboration with the Director and the Getting Word Department, ensuring the highest standards of audio and video production.
Migrate existing oral history collections onto an accessible digital platform and design a plan to catalogue and archive all multimedia assets.
Manage the Getting Word digital presence, edit, curate and update website content and educational resources.
Work with descendants and interview participants to obtain updated content permissions for public‑facing educational content.
Support and advise Foundation departments on scholarship about oral history and digital humanities; assist other ICJS and TJF departments with digital history projects.
Present talks and lectures to staff, the public, and visiting groups; consult on event content and public programming.
Manage all Getting Word social media accounts, building out a social strategy and content pipeline.
Build and keep up‑to‑date digital multimedia profiles for key interpretive figures from Monticello’s enslaved community.
Coordinate and produce content capture of key Getting Word programming for public‑facing content and archive.
Qualifications
Community‑focused, collaborative professional with training and demonstrated experience conducting and curating oral history interviews.
Knowledge of African American cultural history and historiography of the eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth century.
Knowledge of Thomas Jefferson, his life, times, and legacy or willingness to develop such knowledge base.
Fluency in digital media, humanities, and multimedia storytelling.
Expertise capturing, curating, and sharing personal narratives for a diverse set of stakeholders and a broader public audience.
Experience researching African American genealogy.
Excellent computer skills; proficient in video and audio editing software (Adobe Audition, Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut).
Education
Master’s Degree required.
Physical Demands And Work Considerations Most of the time will be spent sitting, reading, or working in front of a computer. May need to climb ladders for research and travel to the Monticello mountain top. Occasional night and weekend work. Travel to oral history collections, research trips, conferences, and other events is required.
