General Information The Department of Mathematics & Statistics at James Madison University invites applications for one tenure-track position in statistics at the assistant or associate professor level to begin in August 2026. We are particularly interested in candidates with interests or expertise in statistics with connections to data science and interdisciplinary research.

Our department includes 57 full-time faculty across pure mathematics, applied mathematics, statistics, and mathematics education. We offer bachelor’s degrees in Mathematics and Statistics (including a Data Science concentration) and minors in Mathematics, Statistics, Computational Analytics, and Mathematics for Elementary & Middle Grades Teachers. We value undergraduate research, outreach, and a strong emphasis on teaching quality.

Duties and Responsibilities The successful candidate will be committed to engaging undergraduate teaching of students of all backgrounds, developing or continuing a research program (preferably involving undergraduates), and contributing to the department through service appropriate to their career stage. Teaching load is approximately 9 contact hours per semester, typically including two course preparations (introductory statistics and an upper-level course based on faculty interest and department need). Scholarly work should be disseminated via peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations. Departmental, college, and/or university service will be based on interest and need.

Qualifications

A Ph.D. in statistics or a closely related field by August 2026.

Demonstrated excellence in or clear potential for teaching undergraduate statistics courses and creating supportive learning environments.

Potential for or demonstrated success in developing an active research agenda in statistics or data science, preferably accessible to undergraduates.

Potential for and interest in mentoring undergraduates in scholarly activities and career paths.

Potential for seeking external funding, perhaps through interdisciplinary collaboration with other faculty.

Potential for and interest in serving the department, college, and university in appropriate service positions.

Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

Potential to support the development of statistics courses with connections to data science.

Potential to teach existing and future graduate-level interdisciplinary statistics and/or data science courses.
