Overview General Description of Position: The individual in this role will assume the responsibilities of curriculum development, classroom management, and community relations as mandated for CTE teachers in Indiana. The instructor will impart a diverse array of criminal/street law, motor vehicle law, juvenile law, community policing, vehicle theft and stress management knowledge and skills through classroom and laboratory instruction within the Career and Technical Education Department. This approach aligns with the Criminal Justice Next Level Program of Study Pathway.

Responsibilities

Instruction in criminal justice and career investigation.

Knowledgeable of CTSO organizations.

Establish a CTE advisory committee to help the program and provide updates to implement into CTE curriculum.

Maintain student files, training records, internship hours and observations, and all reports concerning student certifications. Plan and deliver pathway curriculum in a highly engaging classroom and laboratory. Maintain and enter all required data for student grades, attendance, and discipline. Create and maintain a positive learning environment for students. Prepare lesson plans and accompanying resources required to meet the objectives of the CTE Next Level Programs of Study (NLPS) pathway standards.

Maintain and inventory Perkins materials, all service tools, equipment, and technology.

Work cooperatively with other CTE pathway instructors, specialists, and administrators.

Follow building and district rules and procedures when performing assigned responsibilities.

Demonstrate positive interpersonal relationships by practicing good human relations with students, staff, parents, and community partners.

Other duties as assigned by the principal or director of the Area Career Center.

Specific Skills and Knowledge

Familiar with criminal justice related careers and opportunities.

Possess/Ability to Obtain Emergency Telecommunications Certification (NAED) along with the ability to teach and certify students.

Plan and implement criminal justice coursework and planning of developmentally appropriate practices and activities.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

Candidate must have appropriate Indiana teaching license or be eligible for license based on education and work experience. (Eligibility is defined as holding or being eligible for a Workplace Specialist (WS) License by having over 4000-6000 documented hours in the field in the last five years).

Five years of progressively responsible police officer experience in a law enforcement agency or program, preferred.

CTE: Trade & Industrial: Criminal Justice 5-12, Workplace Specialist: Criminal Justice 9-12, or Workplace Specialist: Law Enforcement 9-12.

Must be eligible to teach dual credit courses through Vincennes University either traditionally, tested, or provisional.

Traditional Criteria: Bachelor’s Degree in the discipline or related area OR an Associate’s Degree in the discipline or related area plus a minimum of two years’ (or more, as determined by the department) documented related industry experience. Any applicable licensures or certifications.

Tested Experience: Combination of education, training, applicable licensures/certifications, and relevant occupational experience commensurate with the level of expertise required in the discipline.

Provisional (Education Plan Required): Be willing and able to earn the credentials required (generally a certification or licensure) for traditional or tested experience approval requirements within one year.

Ability to move and/or maneuver equipment and materials weighing as much as 50 pounds.

Duties may require traveling to meetings and work assignments.

Duties may require working under time constraints to meet deadlines.

Potential for interaction with aggressive, disruptive, and/or unruly individuals.
