Fish Screening Section Manager – Environmental Planner 5
Job Status:
Full‑Time / Permanent
Overview Lead statewide fish screening programs, develop policies, manage projects, and supervise a biologist team.
Responsibilities
Provide directional oversight for screening evaluation protocols and support diversion inventories statewide.
Conduct site reviews, collect biological data, assess species use, and propose design options.
Manage screening budgets and contracts.
Coordinate with Yakima Screen Shop staff for compliance and maintenance.
Offer technical expertise to biologists, engineers, and land‑owner partnerships.
Represent WDFW in external review processes, including FERC and the Fish Screening Oversight Committee.
Supervise four (4) full‑time Biologist 3’s and one (1) full‑time Biologist 2.
Facilitate project design, environmental permitting, and construction coordination.
Oversee the screening database and pursue cost‑share and grant opportunities.
Provide fieldwork, travel, and hazard awareness as required.
Qualifications
Master’s degree in biological, environmental, or engineering sciences (or equivalent experience).
Three (3) years of professional experience in biology, environmental engineering, and/or project management.
Experience in fish screening, fish passage, and habitat restoration techniques for salmonids.
Two (2) years of supervisory experience, including training and mentorship.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook); proficiency in ArcGIS or Microsoft Access is preferred.
Valid driver’s license.
Additional Requirements
Travel frequently statewide.
Fieldwork 10‑50% of time; rugged terrain, heavy loads, water work.
Occasional evening or weekend work.
Union representation: Washington Association of Fish & Wildlife Professionals.
