The Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry is recruiting to fill the position of Forester II in Bangor, Maine.
Brief Job Description The Forester II is responsible for marketing and selling timber from the Bureau of Parks Eastern and Western Region Public Reserved Lands. Working with Regional Managers, foresters, contractors, and mills, timber sales are planned, sold, and harvested in coordination. Over 500,000 acres of forest supply 50,000-100,000 cords of wood annually, depending on markets.
This role involves professional and scientific work, including implementing statewide forestry programs, land use and environmental planning, timber sale market development, technology evaluation, and forester training. The Forester II makes decisions on contracting for harvesting and forest products sales, and may supervise lower-level staff. Work is performed with teamwork but under limited supervision.
Typical Duties
Promote forest resource management programs.
Examine forest stands, collect data, and develop management plans.
Issue timber sale offerings and evaluate bids.
Manage grant requests for recreation, wildlife, and forestry projects.
Estimate tree volumes, select trees for harvest, and inform management of costs.
Evaluate timber sales for contracting and develop safe harvesting strategies.
Plan recreational facilities on public lands.
Assist in developing policies and plans for the Bureau.
Coordinate with other agencies on land management programs.
Write reports on forest management, wildlife, and recreation.
Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree in Forestry or related field plus four years of field experience in harvesting, surveying, cruising, timber management, and land planning. Equivalent experience may be substituted for education.
Licensing Licensed as a Registered Professional Forester by the Maine State Board of Registration for Professional Foresters.
Preferred Experience Experience in marketing forest products.
