Job Overview Criminal Investigator III – Lakewood Firearms Dealer Division. Department: Colorado Department of Revenue, Firearms Dealer Division (FDD). Position: Full-time autonomous investigator responsible for compliance, investigations, training, and outreach in Colorado firearms commerce.

Responsibilities

Criminal and Regulatory Investigations Conduct, plan, and complete investigations of alleged violations of Colorado firearms statutes and regulations; prepare investigative reports for criminal court and administrative actions; testify in proceedings.

Interview and Evidence Collection Interview witnesses, suspects, complainants, applicant permittees, and the public; gather evidence and document findings using Division protocols and evidence tracking systems.

Statutory Enforcement Respond to complaints and proactively conduct inspections of permitted firearms businesses as an armed peace officer to prevent and discourage unlawful possession, sale, and transfer of firearms.

Regulatory Compliance Investigate and address alleged violations of Colorado Firearms Dealer regulations from permittees, law enforcement, local authorities, and the public; utilize interview techniques and applicable investigative methods.

Administrative Duties Document all work time and leave in the Department time‑tracking database; maintain communication with supervisors and stakeholders; prepare reports and documents per Division policies; attend required training and maintain certifications.

Training and Outreach Provide training, education, and outreach to law enforcement, firearms dealers, employees, and the general public regarding firearms regulations.

Qualifications

Minimum of 6 years full‑time investigative experience in a regulatory environment.

Valid Colorado POST certification active, in good standing, and free of restrictions.

Bachelor’s degree in a related field (e.g., accounting, public administration, criminal justice, etc.) plus 2 additional years of investigative experience; or, 2 years investigative experience with a bachelor’s degree substituted on a year‑for‑year basis.

Successful completion of background investigation, tax check, and pre‑employment physical and psychological evaluation.

Valid Colorado driver’s license (at time of application).

Willingness to work nights, rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and maintain on‑call status; ability to perform heavy lifting (up to 100 pounds) and drive a state‑owned vehicle if required.

Proficiency with firearms and defensive equipment per Colorado P.O.S.T. standards; ability to testify in administrative or criminal proceedings.

Strong written and oral communication, planning, and organizational skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of Colorado firearms and dealer regulations.

Experience supervising administrative investigations in a regulated environment.

Problem‑solving, troubleshooting, and report‑writing skills.

Experience with rule‑making processes.

Benefits Competitive salary ($60,625.76 – $73,817.38). Benefits include retirement, health insurance, paid time off, and uniform and protective equipment stipends. Eligibility for step pay program and other state benefits per Department policy.
