This position is in the Colorado Department of Revenue, Firearms Dealer Division (FDD). The Criminal Investigator III conducts investigations of permitted firearms businesses to ensure compliance with Colorado Statutes and Regulations. Responsibilities include detailing findings in investigative reports used for criminal court and administrative actions, and testifying in administrative or criminal proceedings. The role provides training, education, and outreach to stakeholders (local authorities, law enforcement agencies, firearms dealers and employees, and the general public) on regulations and laws governing the firearms industry. The investigator assists permittees with information to correct identified issues and performs duties as assigned by the appointing authority or supervisor. The typical day as a Criminal Investigator in the Firearms Dealer Division includes duties performed by a certified Peace Officer (P.O.S.T.) to administer and enforce Colorado\'s Firearms Dealer laws in a consistent and common-sense manner, serving and protecting the Colorado public and fostering a safe and compliant industry within the state. Primary Duties

Criminal and Regulatory Investigations: plan and conduct investigations of alleged violations of firearms statutes, criminal statutes, and regulations; determine violations and take appropriate actions such as issuing a criminal summons, preparing charging documents for criminal violations, or preparing investigation reports for administrative action. Conduct interviews with witnesses, suspects, complainants, applicants, permittees, and the public to obtain information or evidence related to investigations. Utilize division reporting procedures, evidence tracking systems, and databases to support investigations. Make physical arrests when necessary for violations identified during investigations. Statutory Enforcement: respond to complaints and proactively visit/inspect permitted firearms businesses as an armed peace officer to prevent prohibited possession, sale, or transfer of firearms. Conduct investigations of firearms dealer permittees for potential illegal transactions upon request from law enforcement agencies. Regulatory Compliance: respond to and investigate complaints of alleged violations of Colorado Firearms Dealer regulations; demonstrate proficiency in interview techniques and applicable methodologies during investigations. Administrative: accurately document work time and leave, maintain communication with team members and supervisors, participate in required training, and prepare reports in line with division policies. Class Code: A2A4XX — CRIMINAL INVESTIGATOR III Minimum qualifications include one of the following: Experience: Six (6) years of full-time professional investigative experience in a regulatory environment; must possess a valid Colorado POST certification in good standing at the time of applying. Education/Experience: Bachelor\'s degree in a listed field and two (2) years of relevant investigative experience; must possess a valid Colorado POST certification in good standing at the time of applying. Substitutions: criminal investigative experience may substitute for degree on a year-for-year basis. Necessary Special Requirements

Background and tax checks prior to appointment; must possess and maintain a valid Colorado driver\'s license; pass pre-employment checks and evaluations; willingness to work nights, rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays; maintain firearms proficiency; complete required compliance training; capable of heavy lifting up to 100 pounds.
