Location: Lakewood, CO Salary: $60,625.76-$73,817.38

Overview The Criminal Investigator III will conduct investigations of permitted firearms businesses to ensure compliance with Colorado statutes and regulations. The role details findings in investigative reports, provides training, education, and outreach to stakeholders, and assists permittees with corrective information.

Primary Responsibilities

Conduct and plan investigations of alleged violations of firearms statutes and regulations, issuing criminal summons or charging documents and recommending administrative action.

Interview witnesses, suspects, applicants, permittees, and the general public to gather evidence.

Utilize division reporting procedures, evidence tracking systems, and databases to support investigations.

Make physical arrests when necessary for violations identified during investigations.

Respond to complaints and proactively inspect permitted firearms businesses as an armed peace officer.

Maintain accurate documentation of work time, leave, and approvals in the department time-tracking database.

Attend all required training and maintain certifications per division policies.

Qualifications

Six (6) years of full-time professional investigative experience in a regulatory environment (or 2 years of full-time professional investigative experience combined with a Bachelor's degree in a related field).

Valid Colorado POST certification, active and in good standing, with no restrictions, suspensions, or revocations.

Valid Colorado driver’s license.

Background investigation and tax check clearance.

Physical ability to lift up to 100 pounds.

Willingness to work nights, rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and on-call status.

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of Colorado firearms regulations.

Strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.

Experience supervising administrative investigations in a regulated environment.

Problem solving, troubleshooting, and organizational skills.

Experience with rule-making processes.
