Position Overview The Peer Recovery Specialist (PRS) / Community Health Worker (CHW) provides peer-based support to clients in SEARCH’s Housing First programs. This role collaborates closely with Case Managers to help individuals with serious mental illness and/or substance use disorders maintain stable housing after experiencing chronic homelessness. The PRS/CHW builds rapport, models recovery, and empowers clients to move forward in their journey toward independence.

Portfolios are to be assigned and may include a mix of congregate sites and scattered-site program teams. The PRS/CHW works within an integrated care model, linking clients to services, supporting disability benefits navigation, and facilitating skill-building opportunities.

Key Responsibilities

Provide individualized peer support and serve as a role model of resilience and recovery.

Collaborate with Case Managers to support clients in maintaining housing stability.

Assist clients in navigating and applying for SOAR Disability benefits, when appropriate.

Facilitate life skills groups and social activities that promote wellness, recovery, and independent living.

Maintain accurate service notes and client records in HMIS and EPIC (electronic health record) systems.

Empower clients to develop personal goals, strengthen coping skills, and access supportive resources.

Support client engagement across congregate and scattered-site programs.

Qualifications

Education: High School Diploma or GED preferred.

Licensure/Certification: Active credential as a Peer Recovery Specialist (PRS) or Community Health Worker (CHW) required.

For PRS candidates: Ideally, a minimum of 5 years of sustained recovery from substance use and lived experience of homelessness.

Experience: Prior experience supporting clients experiencing homelessness strongly preferred.

Skills: Computer literacy essential, with ability to document services in HMIS and EPIC. Strong communication, relationship-building, and teamwork skills.

Other: Must hold a valid Texas driver’s license with a safe driving record for the past 3 years.

Schedule

Full-time, 40 hours per week.

May include travel between program sites.
