GI Surgery & Surgical Oncology Acute Care Unit
is a 28‑bed acute care unit at UNC Medical Center. The interdisciplinary team provides evidence‑based, high‑quality care to adult post‑surgical patients with gastrointestinal cancers and complex non‑cancer GI illnesses. Student Nurse Externship (SNE I) The SNE I is a prelicensure nursing student who works under the direct supervision of an RN partner to provide direct and indirect patient care in a variety of settings. The externship is intended to enhance foundational nursing education and role socialization within a clinical setting. Responsibilities
Observe, collect, and document patient information and promptly report significant changes to an RN or provider. Participate in the collaborative identification and reporting of patient safety issues. Assist patients and families during admission, orientation, and discharge. Provide care and treatments as outlined in the plan of care, including vital signs, specimen collection, wound care, and postural drainage. Assist with activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, feeding, ambulation, and 1:1 patient and family interactions. Perform indirect care such as cleaning, changing linens, re‑stocking supplies, and clerical functions. Reinforce routine teaching and document patient understanding of instructions. Assist providers with routine examinations, procedures, and procurement of equipment during emergency situations. Education Requirements
High School Diploma or GED. Current enrollment in an accredited prelicensure nursing program with anticipated graduation within 12 months. Licensure/Certification Requirements
Listed as Nursing Assistant I with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Professional Experience Requirements
None required. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Requirements
Fluent in verbal and written English. Ability to organize and prioritize assignments in patient care. Basic computer skills. Lift and carry 40–50 lbs (e.g., push/pull patients on a bed, stretcher, lateral transfers). Frequent to continuous standing/walking. Perform activities specific to the role including kneeling, bending, squatting, and CPR. EEO Statement
