Senior HVAC Design Engineer
to serve as
Area Lead for the Nuclear Island HVAC scope
on a new nuclear power plant project. This role requires deep technical expertise in nuclear facility HVAC systems, a strong command of ASME NQA-1 design controls, and the ability to lead complex design efforts across multidisciplinary teams. As part of a large-scale engineering and construction program, the selected candidate will drive the execution of advanced HVAC design strategies under strict compliance with regulatory requirements, industry standards, and safety-critical performance expectations. Key Responsibilities
Serve as
Nuclear Island HVAC Area Lead , coordinating HVAC scope execution across project phases. Develop and review engineering deliverables including calculations, layouts, design criteria, specifications, and system architecture. Lead HVAC design for air handling units, ductwork, chilled water systems, and refrigerant-based systems; perform equipment sizing and layout coordination. Apply applicable nuclear regulatory and design codes such as
ASME AG-1, RG 1.52, RG 1.140, RG 1.143, 10 CFR Part 50 & 52 , and
NUREG-0800 . Participate in permitting, procurement, and subcontracting processes related to HVAC scope. Track material quantities, project progress, and engineering resource forecasts. Collaborate with multidiscipline engineering teams and interface with QA/QC and project management to ensure compliance with
ASME NQA-1
requirements. Support field engineering and construction phases including commissioning, startup, and project close-out. Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (or related field). Minimum
10 years of HVAC design experience , including prior work on
nuclear power plant design projects . Current or past clearance to work on nuclear facility projects. Experience working under a formal
ASME NQA-1 quality assurance program . Familiarity with nuclear-specific codes, standards, and regulatory guidance including: RG 1.52, RG 1.140, RG 1.143, RG 1.26, RG 1.29, RG 1.201 ASME AG-1, 10 CFR Part 50 & Part 52 Ideal Qualifications
Strong knowledge of
HVAC load calculations, ductwork design, chilled water/refrigerant systems , and psychrometrics. Proven capability to design and size equipment such as
air handling units, chillers, steam coils, fans, heaters, and cooling towers . Knowledge of
ASHRAE Fundamentals ,
ICC codes (IBC, IMC, IFC) ,
SMACNA ,
NFPA , and related HVAC design standards. Full project lifecycle experience: front-end design, detailed design, bidding, construction, and commissioning. Prior experience supporting large-scale government or commercial
nuclear facility buildouts .
