Overview Orthopedic Physicians Alaska (OPA) seeks a highly skilled Orthopedic Casting Technician for OPA Lake Otis, Full-Time. General Summary:

In a collaborative environment and under the guidance of physicians, orthopedic technicians teach patients to use walking aids such as canes and crutches, and fit and adjust equipment as necessary. They apply and remove plaster and synthetic casts, inform patients about treatment risks, and under the guidance of surgeons, fabricate splints and manage other medical technology, including braces and prosthetic limbs.

Responsibilities

Follows the organization\'s standards for ethical business conduct.

Must be highly motivated and work well in a team environment.

Conducts self as a positive role model and team member.

Performs splinting, casting, and application of traction, braces and other devices under the direction of an orthopedic physician or physician assistant.

Performs direct and indirect patient care activities within the scope of practice of an orthopedic technologist and specific training, assisting orthopedic physician with dressing changes, suture and pin removal, incision and drainage, reducing fractures, etc.

Educates patients and staff regarding proper care and use of appliances.

Documents the care administered.

Monitors and orders all casting, clinical, DME, and patient supplies including instruments.

cleans and autoclaves instruments.

Orients and provides on-the-job training in casting and splinting to resident physicians and staff.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge:

Knowledge of health care field and medical office protocols/procedures; knowledge of sterile technique and orthopedic supplies; knowledge of specific assisting tasks related to particular medical practice.

Skills:

Tact and diplomacy in interpersonal interactions; ability to effectively share information with patients and families; skilled in the application of casting, splinting, and orthopedic appliances.

Abilities:

Ability to learn and retain information regarding patient care procedures; ability to project a pleasant and professional image; ability to plan, prioritize and complete delegated tasks; ability to demonstrate compassion with others.

Education and Experience

Education:

High school diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED).

Preferred Experience:

Medical Assistant or orthopedic technology certificate or related associate\'s degree.
