Summary We are seeking a Power Electrical Engineer with extensive experience to join the Engineering & Construction Department as part of the Engineering and Technical Support Team. This team of subject matter experts plays a critical role in supporting Project Managers with the execution of capital growth projects across gas and liquid transmission facilities, as well as gas processing and NGL fractionation plants.
The candidate should be self-driven, professional, and passionate about their discipline, demonstrating strong integrity and focus on all aspects of their work. This role requires providing technical guidance throughout the project lifecycle, from design through commissioning and turnover to operations. Success in this position will demand excellent time management and organizational skills, as the engineer will support multiple projects simultaneously.
Strong interpersonal and communication abilities are essential, as the role involves close collaboration with contractors, cross-functional company groups, and field personnel. The position requires frequent travel and a significant presence in the field, particularly during commissioning activities. Candidates should be knowledgeable in industry codes and standards—such as NEC, NFPA, and API. They must also be capable of working independently with efficiency and accountability.
Responsibilities
Provide technical support to Project Managers through the life-cycle of capital growth projects, mainly in the areas of estimation, design, procurement, construction, installation and commissioning of gas compressor stations and liquid pump station facilities.
Provide field guidance and support to engineering and construction contractors as instructed by project management to progress capital projects to timely economic completion.
Review, evaluate and recommend the design and installation of both medium and low voltage electrical systems to ensure compliance with NEC and company requirements for efficient, safe and economical operation.
Represent the Company in area of expertise with contractors, suppliers, third party engineering firms, utilities, outside consultants, and industry associations.
Effectively interface and integrate with other Company departments including Procurement, Engineering, and Operations to effectively fulfill the scope of the project.
Plan, schedule, and coordinate detailed phases of engineering work while supporting the department and Project Manager with delivery.
Assist with the commissioning and start-up of facilities and lead the efforts in correcting electrical systems faults. Diagnose and resolve software and hardware interface issues as needed.
Accountable for completing tasks with quality, and compliance with the applicable codes and standards.
Create and update technical specifications and Engineering Standards as needed.
Travel could be up to 50%, as required; role to be based out of Houston, Texas.
Conduct Engineering studies and prepare construction estimates elaborating on cost, time and electrical power-requirements for oil and gas facilities.
Prepare and/or review Arc Flash and associated power studies (SKM or ETAP).
Review and assist with the design and layout of substations in both transmission and distribution voltages.
Review and approve or modify protection schemes and protection relay programming.
Assist with the design, construction and commissioning of generation projects in the 10MW range including utility tie in.
Develop and/or review plans for area classification in conjunction with company standards, API RP500, and AGA 1001.
Review, evaluate and correct faults in medium and low voltage systems.
Develop and/or review grounding plans for power systems and instrumentation in reliable integration with designed cathodic protection systems.
Review and audit electrical safety in conjunction NFPA 70E and company standards.
Required Experience
Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering.
A minimum of 6+ years of experience in design, field construction, and/or commissioning of electrical systems for oil and gas industrial facilities. Title assignments will be commensurate with experience.
Strong working knowledge of NEC, IEEE, NETA, and NEMA, with extensive knowledge in NFPA 70E and API RP500; Hazardous area classification.
Experience in design, selection and requirements of medium and low voltage motors, VFDs, and AC power generators.
Experience with medium and low voltage MCCs, switchgear and breakers.
Experience with transformer selection, sizing, and design.
Experience with power protection relays (GE and SEL).
Experience with UPS and battery backup systems.
Experience with power systems studies software such as SKM or ETAP.
Ability to perform job responsibilities with minimal guidance or supervision.
Ability to take initiative and work with both company and non-company personnel in a fast-paced environment with multiple concurrent assignments.
Strong verbal and written communications skills; ability to support and communicate with team members, clients (PMs), contractors and other cross-functional groups.
Proficient PC-based skills including MS Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook, Power Point, Access).
Analytical and problem-solving skills to address complex technical problems.
Valid driver’s license and driving record satisfactory to the Company.
Maintain effective working relationships with Operations personnel, Contractors, and vendors.
Preferred Experience
Experience with gas transmission compression facilities, turbine-driven centrifugal compression systems, gas engine-driven reciprocating compressors, and electric-driven compression systems.
Experience with rotating equipment in Gas Processing and Liquid Fractionating plants.
Experience with large gas-driven generators and synchronization controls.
Experience with substation design and protection, typically less than 20MVA.
Experience with pole design for distribution level voltage.
Experience doing technical bid evaluations.
Experience with technical writing of standards and SOPs.
Experience with large capital projects greater than 5 million dollars.
Experience with electrical building design, cable tray and conduit systems, and support structures.
Experience Levels and Requirements
The Engineer level requires a bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline and 3-6 years of relevant job-related experience.
The Senior Engineer level requires a bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline and 6-10 years of relevant job-related experience.
The Staff Engineer level requires a bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline and 10+ years of relevant job-related experience.
Working Conditions
Driving, walking, and standing frequently.
Exposure to adverse weather, cramped conditions, and some heavy lifting.
Must be able to work effectively away from traditional office environment (hotels, airports, roadside parks, etc.).
Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time due to prolonged periods of sitting or standing.
Frequent visits to industrial/manufacturing settings, with exposure to materials, chemicals, extreme temperatures, loud machinery, and required PPE.
