Speakers Guide - Planning Commission Meetings
The Planning Commission welcomes all Chesapeake residents and interested parties to attend and participate in Planning Commission Meetings. If you would like to speak at an upcoming meeting, read on to learn how to sign up and what to expect. When and where does Planning Commission meet?
Planning Commission meetings are held on the second Wednesday of every month at 7:00 p.m. Meetings are held in the City Council Chambers, located on the first floor of City Hall. Planning Commission Meeting Agendas are posted online the Monday prior to the meeting. How do I register to speak or provide my comments?
Anyone wishing to speak to Planning Commission must fill out a speaker card, located at the entrance of the Council Chambers, and submit it to the Secretary of the Commission prior to the 7:00 p.m. opening of the meeting. Comments regarding an upcoming agenda item can also be submitted electronically using the Electronic Comment Form . Comments received by 4:00 p.m. on the day of the Planning Commission meeting will be shared with the Planning Commission prior to the meeting. What topics can I address with Planning Commission and how long can I speak for?
The Planning Commission is divided into three sections: Continuances and Withdrawals: Speakers will have three minutes to comment on all applications that are recommended for continuance but must limit comments to the continuance request and not the merits of the application. Public Hearing Consent Agenda: Speakers will have up to five minutes to comment on all applications on the Consent Agenda. Public Hearing Regular Agenda Items: Speakers will have three to five minutes to comment, depending on the number of speakers registered to speak. Where and when will I speak during the meeting?
You are welcome to sit anywhere in the public area of the City Council Chambers. There are marked accommodations for those with disabilities, including a designated area for wheelchair users. The Secretary of the Commission will call your name when it is your turn to speak. Speakers must present their remarks from the podium in the well of the Council Chambers. Speakers with disabilities may use the podium and microphones just inside the doors to the Council Chambers if they choose. When you begin your remarks, state your name and address for the record. If you have materials or documents to show the Planning Commission, please provide these to the Secretary when you check in prior to the start of the meeting. You must provide eleven copies to be distributed to members of the Planning Commission and for record keeping purposes.
